Dorm Energy Competition (October 2008)

During the month of October, 2008, ESW/MOSS hosted a competition between the eight dorms of Harvey Mudd College to see which dorm could reduce its energy usage the most relative to the previous month. Since real-time metering was installed over the summer in the four outer dorms (Atwood, Case, Linde, and Sontag), live data of their energy consumption was displayed in Hoch-Shanahan Dining Commons throughout the month of October. The real-time metering was provided by Rhizome Systems, a start-up company created by Professor Joseph King of Harvey Mudd College.

Posters were placed around campus and ESW/MOSS members went room-to-room reminding their fellow residents to conserve energy and passing out a flier of energy-saving tips, which may be found here. The winning dorm was awarded a $500 discretionary fund to be used on dorm improvements, provided that the dorm demonstrated an environmental benefit from the improvement. Second place was awarded $300 and third place was awarded $200, both in similar discretionary funds. A celebration was held on November 3, 2008, in the Platt Campus Center courtyard to commemorate the event and to honor the three winning dorms. To see pictures of the celebration, click here.

As a whole, the residential end of campus reduced its energy usage by 16% over the month of September. As for individual dorms:
