The Harvey Mudd Chapter of Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW) was founded in the Fall of 2006 by Annika Eberle and Autumn Petros-Good. The club's purpose was to promote sustainability in developing nations through service projects that could utilize the resources available at HMC. Under the guidance of faculty advisor Susan Martonosi, the club began holding regular meetings and pursuing the possibility of a service project in the village of Ngomano, Kenya.
Later in the same year, Mudders Organizing for Sustainability Solutions (MOSS) was founded by several other students. The purpose of the group was to evaluate practices at HMC and design solutions to help the college to be more sustainable. Working with the Facilities and Maintenance department, Dining Services, and the Dean of Students, MOSS identified areas in which the college could be more environmental and pursued them.
Since both clubs promoted sustainability, and many of the members overlapped, the two clubs began meeting together in the fall or 2007. The clubs merged to become ESW/MOSS in the fall of 2008.
