These pictures are from the summer work performed by Annika Eberle (HMC '09) and Rob Best (HMC '10) as part of the Kenya Project (for more info, click here). The two prototyped both a slow sand filter and a solar still to determine the best method for disinfecting and removing mineral contaminants from well water.
Rocks at the bottom of the filter prevent the sand from being washed out.
Rob Best (HMC '10) with the beginning materials for the first sand filter prototype.
Rob Best (HMC '10) adding sand to the prototype. The sand removes some minerals from the water and facilitates the build-up of a biological layer to remove bacteria.
The completed first prototype of the sand filter. This one had problems with sealing.
The second prototype of a sand filter which held water much better.
The solar still prototyped by the team.
