Transcribing

This is where students can find information for transcribing Venerable Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche’s teachings and is intended for those already working on projects or for those who are interested in beginning transcribing.

Transcribing Dharma teachings provides an opportunity to work closely with the teachings and is the first step towards making them available to others. This way of working with the teachings provides a tremendous benefit for oneself as well as for others when published in many various forms. The need for committed transcribers is ongoing, with a considerable list of past teachings that are not yet transcribed. We are also trying to stay current with Rinpoche’s full teaching schedule and we ask all students to consider contributing to preserve these precious teachings.

This site is designed as a central location for downloading the following:

• MSB Transcribing Guidelines

• Transcribing Template

• Transcribing Software

• MP3 Recordings

This will expedite the process of receiving recordings so those working on projects can quickly access talks. It is also being set up so that those new to transcribing can easily and quickly find the materials needed for helping with this project.

The Process:

For anyone working on transcribing please read the MSB Transcribing Guidelines. These give the basics of what we are looking for in a finished transcript and answer most questions. They can be downloaded here and printed.

The Template is the format for beginning all transcripts and includes valuable information for use later on. Be sure to include this at the beginning of all transcripts.

The Transcribing Software we are currently using, Express Scribe, is available as a free download. It allows a person to play the MP3 on their computer while keeping count of the time of the talk. It includes features like slowing the talk down or speeding it up. A foot pedal can be added and used seamlessly for those who prefer it.

MP3 recordings will be uploaded to a separate page for downloading by transcribers only. Talks will be added by the Transcribing Coordinators as needed and scheduled with individuals for specific projects. There will also be an area of unassigned talks that can be checked out and transcribed by anyone who finds they have extra time on their hands or wishes to try transcribing before committing to a specific project.

When a transcript is completed it is essential to email it to the transcribing coordinator for archiving.

Please email the transcripts to: kate@windhorsecare.com.

Please send all inquires, suggestions and comments to kate@windhorsecare.com.

Editing

With our ongoing editing project we are seeking to transcribe and edit Rinpoche's teachings into a cohesive and smoothly flowing written adaptation of his spoken words. This effort begins with the literal transcript. Recognizing that any spontaneous oral presentation will require editing for those who may read the transcript, Rinpoche has encouraged us to edit his spoken teachings into a written format that reads clearly and and concisely in English.

In reading Rinpoche's words, we do not enjoy the same advantages as those who were present in the room when Rinpoche shared his vibrant and eloquent teaching during a live program. Our task is to convey all of Rinpoche's meaning intact, maintaining his vitality and depth, while eliminating grammatical or idiomatic interference for the reader.

Our intention is to edit specific programs in their entirety, and to convey these written teachings as sangha publications available to Rinpoche's students.

As more editors are trained, and gain experience with the editing process, we will be able to make more of Rinpoche's teachings accessible in this form. If you would like to become a participant in this effort, and if you have a love of language, are poetically-inclined, or have prior editing experience, please contact us about your interest.
