Grading Scale for 5th:
97% to 100% = 4
75% to 96% = 3
60% to 74% = 2
0% to 59% = 1
Grading Criteria:
Students are expected to keep and maintain a Science Notebook. Science Notebooks will be used to record questions, observations, experiments, and concepts covered throughout the year. These notebooks reflect upon what you have learned and serve as a reference when reviewing challenging concepts. Science notebooks will be collected and graded various times throughout the school year.
Lab Experiments conducted in classroom will be either demonstrated by the teacher or conducted by groups of students in the classroom. Notes, questions, concepts, and reflections are to be kept by all students for all lab experiments in their science notebook. Students maybe required to write additional notes on lined paper that is separate from the science notebook, that will coincide with the school textbook. If a child is absent and misses the notes provided in class, all notes from the textbook are provided on this website through the Science Notes and Review link.
Students will be assigned up to four Lab Reports throughout the school year. A specific format is provided. Students must write down their findings to demonstrate their understanding of what they have learned in a concise manner to receive full credit. Attendance is vital to ensure understanding of lessons and concepts covered in the experiments. Students can download a copy of the Lab Report format if they need further help.
Projects will be assigned throughout the school year (usually 2 to 4). Class time may be provided for some projects, but majority of work will be completed at home. Most projects are group related, but students maybe required to create their OWN experiment for the final project at the end of the year (determined by teacher).
Tests and Quizzes will typically be given in the middle and end of each topic area covered in the class. For tests, students will typically be provided a study guide 2 to 3 weeks before the test. Study guides are assigned as a week long homework assignment that is due 7 days from handout. 90% of what is on the study guide is on the test. Study guides are not collected and only checked for completeness. It is the student’s responsibility to collect the correct information for questions on the study guides. Students are free to ask questions and for guidance in finding answers in the textbook, but work must be completed by the student and in its entirety. Study guides and notes are provided in class are found in the Science Notes and Review link.
