Mathematics knows no races, genders, or geographic boundaries; for mathematics, the whole world is one country.

-David Hilbert

Although all skills are equally important for a well rounded student, it appears that mathematics is one of the most needed skills in today's occupations. If your student is not doing well in math, then let's turn them around. Encourage them to ask questions, put in the required amount of effort, better develop their academic stamina, better develop their active listening, practice by completing their assignments, and pay critical attention to their studies. Lastly, be here on time every day.

Mathematics Teaching = Multi-dimensional approach with a focus on learning depth

The critical areas of instruction in this class, instructional time, focuses on three critical areas:

(1) Developing understanding and fluency with multi-digit multiplication and developing understanding of dividing to find quotients involving multi-digit dividends.

(2) Developing an understanding of fraction equivalence, addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators, and multiplication of fractions by whole numbers.

(3) Understanding that geometric figures can be analyzed and classified based on their properties, such as having parallel sides, perpendicular sides, particular angle measures, and symmetry.

Note: Students also work toward fluency in addition and subtraction within 1,000,000 using the standard algorithm.

If you notice that your student is earning 1s, in math, then PLEASE encourage them to ask questions. PLEASE do what needs to be done in order for them to be successful. PLEASE, If they are not turning in their work/redo-marked work, then they are not are not practicing math, and expect the\at they complete all assignments. If they don't practice, they will not learn what they are required to learn, so PLEASE expect that they practice, because this lack of math skills will compound to the next and all future years ahead and can lead to many missed concepts by adulthood. Answer this, how can they expect to stay competitive in college or the work force with this lacking skill? It starts early. Please stay on top of your student's academics by holding them accountable for their learning and expecting their best.

WHY THIS ROOM IS DIFFERENT:

There are many opportunities for success in this class. First, students have access to their recess and lunch periods where I offer assistance with all of their assignments. I also allow them to redo, makeup, or finish any assignment that they need-with assistance. I also allow students to redo any assignment that they did not perform as well as expected as many times as they need to be successful-also with assistance. Lastly, I also offer a daily review period of concepts. I call this period the In-Class Grading/Review period. Yes, that's right, I actually spend time reviewing materials from the previous day's lessons. If this is not enough for your student to be successful, then please Dojo message me so that we can discuss this further.

KEY

3 = They get it and can successfully do it alone consistently.

2 = They are getting it sometimes but get held up on occasion.

1 = They don't get it yet.

What is 4th Grade Math?

By the end of grade four, students increase their facility with the four basic arithmetic operations applied to fractions, decimals, and positive numbers. They know and use common measuring units to determine length and area and know and use formulas

to determine the area and perimeter of simple geometric figures. Students know the concept of angle measurement and use a protractor to solve problems. They use grids, tables, graphs, and charts to record and analyze data. Follow link below for more specific standards information:

Common Core State Standards

Redo-Marked Work

Any student may redo any assignment they feel they could have performed better on. This policy may change at any time and becomes less flexible around the end of the reporting periods. Redo-marked work can take up to ten school days to show up on my electronic grade book.

EXTRA CREDIT - three ways to earn it.

*Every student can earn extra credit in math by completing extra problems on their in-class assignments (making sure to answer the questions correctly and completely). On days where we do not complete all of the problems on an assignment in class, your student will have to complete the remaining problems on the same page to earn any extra credit.

*Another way to earn extra credit is by completing Extensions. Information on Extensions will be available soon.

**Make sure to put your name on your work and turn it in to the specified classroom turn-in area.
