D.O.No.F.1-10/2007-NVS(Comm.)
August 17, 2007
Dear Principal,
You may recall that I have been emphasizing upon the importance of good communication skills for the students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, especially in English. English is used extensively in administration, business, social interaction and as a lingua franca in the whole world. Unless our children are equipped with the necessary skills and competency for speaking, reading and writing English correctively and properly, they will continue to have handicap in their personal life as well as in profession. This requirement becomes all the more significant in the era of globalization.
NVS Headquarter has also started the process of analyzing the problem faced by our schools and students. We have invited English teachers from JNVs and experts in the field of teaching & learning English. A one-week workshop-cum-training was held at NLI, Goa for the English teachers. Experts from Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages, Hyderabad, Ms.Shifali Ray, Writer of English language books interacted with our teachers at NLI, Goa. A workbook is being developed by the teachers of JNVs to enhance English communication.
We are also planning to supply some materials – textual and audio to improve the speaking and listening skills in English for the students. I also understand that some of English teachers in JNVs have designed course materials by using multi-media technology for enhancing the learning of English. One example I came across is that of Shri Manoj Kumar Mishra, TGT( English) at JNV, Durg, Chhattisgarh who has started teaching English to the students of lower classes in an innovative way. I believe that many other English teachers, both TGTs & PGTs are using innovative ways to teach English effectively.
As you may agree with me, English is learnt by listening and speaking. You shall take leadership role for improving English communication in JNVs. You know what is required to be done. However, in order to supplement your efforts, we have already issued instructions to you to install satellite TV connections so that children can watch cartoon movies, English movies, etc. You should suitably schedule programmes for children to watch cartoon and English movies.
You are also encouraged to involve all the teachers including subject teachers in improving English communication skill among all the students of JNVs. I look forward to hearing suggestions from you or the teachers in this regard. You may send you suggestions by e-mail at “navodaya@ren02.nic.in” or navodaya@nda.vsnl.net.in.
Please share the contents of this letter with all teachers in your Vidyalaya.
With regards,
Yours sincerely,
