My name is Ian Monger and I live in Bristol, and am a Magistrate and Tree Officer here. I was sat in the churchyard of St Georges, Bristol today having my lunch, and decided to look on the internet on my phone for the name of the person on the gravestone beneath my feet. And so I came accross your post on the RootsWeb page http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/BRISTOL_AND_DISTRICT/2011-02/1297373452.
The grave was in memory of Anna Maria Leyson, died 16th June 1846 aged 83 years, 'relict' of Captain Philip Leyson, and so I thought I'd send some photos in case this was of interest to you. I've attached some photos I took today.
I assume the grave stone is not in its original position because it's been laid with others tightly around a WWI memorial - almost like paving slabs. The Leyson grave is the most legible of the stones now there. I'm also not sure of the difference between 'In Memory of...' and 'Here lies...' etc. I guess they mean the same thing? The full gravestone text reads:
"Underneath this Stone is deposited
the remains of BETTY DONOVAN
who departed this life
27th September 1844, Aged 72 Years
[r]elict of HENRY DONOVAN Esq
who died at the Isla[nd of A]ntiqua.
In Memory of ANNA MAR[IA L]EYSON,
of this Parish relict of
[Cap]tain PHILIP LEYSON, of this Port,
[di]ed 16th June 1846, Aged 83 Years"
It's a lovely spot, and St georges in Bristol is now a highly respected folk and classical music venue often used for receordings by the nearby BBC Bristol.
