The Bryant Family

T(h)eresa Bryant was the 4th child of John Bryant and Mary Ann Findlay.

Theresa was born probably: 16.11.1851 at Goulburn, and baptised: 1.1.1852., Goulburn.

Her father John’s occupation is shown as gaoler.....(listed as builder on her death certificate....September 1853)

On 9.6.1879 her mother Mary Ann dies in Reynolds Street, Goulburn. Theresa, her daughter, is the informant. Mary Ann had remarried - was now Mary Ann Payne. (According to NSW BDM records Mary A Payne died in Goulburn in 1879 (ref # 5516/1879) and listed her parents as John and Alice (Findlay)

Teresa Bryant married Frederick Ewen (a trooper) on 10-12-1879, not long after your her mum's death. They married in Yass. She lists no mother and no father, no bithplace and no occupation. The witnesses are a couple by the name of Sampson Henry John and Fanny.

HJ Sampson was Mayor of Yass in 1876 and 1879. Fanny is Frances, the daughter of Henry and Eliza. Born in 1863. (Fanny is a well known nick name for Frances.) She was well educated as were all of the children. (per Alan Byrnes a_byrnes@optusnet.com.au)

Theresa Ewen's (nee Bryant) death certificate gives the occupation of her father as "builder". The occupation of “builder” is understandable – he had worked as a bricklayer.

John William Byrnes is very interesting. I am also descended from James and Maria Byrnes. Their first son was John William, their sixth (?) child was Lawrence, my grandfather. I had a copy of John’s birth certificate but can’t remember where it is – I’ll look for it. I have a note that on John’s birth certificate is a note to the effect that his name is “Byrnes” despite the fact that his father and informant at the birth was named “Byrne”.

I also have this note: “John William joins the Railways in 1875 and retires as Stationmaster at Granville in 1921.”

Theresa never knew her father John Bryant - he died in an accident in September 1853 when Theresa was only an infant per Goulburn Herald 10 September 1853. He was 37 years old (giving birth year of 1816)
