William (age 24) emigrated from Ireland with 5 brothers (Thomas 26, Peter 22, Edward 21, Timothy 19 and James 18), and Catherine aged 21 who appears to be the wife of Thomas. The passenger manifest shows their age and that
None could read nor write.
They were Roman Catholic.
They came as Bounty immigrants being brought in by Messrs A.B. Smith & Co. on the ship United Kingdom, departing Liverpool 25 May 1841 and arriving Port Jackson 7 September 1841. Their occupation was listed as Farm labourer / servant for Thomas and Catherine and labourer for the others.
This obituary of Edward FAHEY, brother to William in the Catholic Press of 27 June 1901 sums up their situation.
Their father, John, and mother Honor [or perhaps Nora(h)] - her surname was RUHANE - a derivation of RYAN - were both 27 at the time of his birth (giving a birth year for them of about 1790.
Information is that William had a first wife, Anne QUINLAN with whom he had three children.
He subsequently married Elizabeth REED (REID) and together they had a further 17 ? (but, also see death certificate which suggests far fewer (see below) children.
He also had a son from another relationship.
The daughter of Elizabeth REID (?REED) and William FAHEY, Mary Josephine FAHEY, married the son of Honora(h) RYAN and James COFFEY, Timothy Joseph COFFEY.
The daughter of Mary Jospehine FAHEY and Timothy Joseph COFFEY, Alice Catherine COFFEY, married the son of Theresa Mary Agnes BRYANT and Frederick Stanley Patterson EWEN, Frederick Percival EWEN.
