Going back five generations

= 2 parents

+4 grandparents

+8 great grandparents

+16 great, great grandparents

+32 great-great-great grandparents

= 62 people!! And that only gets us back to the 1600's.

Whilst the extended family has a scattering of the great (renowned shipbuilder, master mariners), and the good (all of us lot), it seems that we have our fair share of villains in the family from a possible arsonist, dealings with bushranger Ben Hall, possibly first fleet husband and wife convicts, the very politically incorrect involvement in the slave trade out of Bristol, as well as the very 21st Century crime of attempted identity theft of an English Earl back in the 19th Century.

Who cares?

Books, films and TV are filled with other peoples stories - real or imaginary. So why not try a bit of forensic researching and find out about our own.

A work in progress, this website brings together research on the genealogy of my (the Powter) family and the affiliated/extended network up to the early 20th century. The research is undertaken with best endeavours and whilst in some instances proof of a link is conclusive, in others it is open to conjecture.

The website also attempts to provide background to the life and times in which our ancestors lived. The difficulties of life in Ireland even before the devastating potato famine, the information which helped in undertaking what for many was a first ocean voyage - a trip of four months into the unknown - and for a lucky few the ability to return to the old country and gloat!
