Shoals or shoal water is water that is too shallow for a ship.  Rocks are rocks.  Obviously, if you are on a ship it is dangerous to be around rocks and shoals.  In the old days, sailors called our Navy Regulations "Rocks and Shoals" and were careful to steer clear of any violations.  For our cadets, "Rocks and Shoals" describe both the formal cadet knowledge they are expected to know and a set of lore and "rates" on which they may be quizzed.  Review the attachments below for more information.

"Animals Around the Ship" provides the common names and sailor slang used to refer to many objects around ships, both naval and merchant.  These terms, many of which are quite old but still in common use, were developed over time as landsmen were taught the ropes onboard ship.  In such a situation, tagging an object with a name that could be used as a mnemonic device to remember its purpose helped the landlubber become a sailor.

"NJROTC Knowledge" provides the general knowledge that Middletown Cadets are expected to know.  This knowledge will be tested during uniform inspections and advancement exams.

"New Cadet Handbook" is the on-line version of our MHS Cadet Handbook.  This is where you find information related to our program here at MHS, including our billet structure, cadet responsibilities, and similar items of interest.

"Reef Points" is a greatly minimized version of some of the plebe knowledge that midshipmen at the United States Naval Academy are required to learn.

"The Laws of the Navy" is Captain Hopwood's advice to his brother officer in the Royal Navy at the turn of the last century.  Still good advice today for those in the service and beyond.
