2014 STUDENT ATHLETE NOMINEES - FINALISTS

2014 FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR FINALISTS

Our past 6 winners have been split between Medomak Valley and Georges Valley High Schools,with Allison Cornforth from Medomak Valley earning the award in 2008, Erin Judkins from Georges Valley in 2009, Danielle Frye from Georges Valley in 2010 Kelsey Benner from Medomak Valley in 2011, Alanna Vose from Medomak Valley in 2012 and former Buccaneer Kennadi Grover of Oceanside in 2013.

This year’s 5 nominated female student athletes include Brittany Bowman of Camden Hills,Brooke Dugan of Oceanside, Abby Hersom of Oceanside, Rebekah Hilt of Camden Hills and Bailey Plourde of Lincoln Academy.

Brittany Bowman ran for the Windjammers cross country, indoor track and outdoor track squads, where she was a first team All KVAC selection in all 3 sports. Bowman was top 5 finisher in the State Championship Cross Country meet, including winning the 2011 State Championship and was the 2010 KVAC Champion of the Year. Bowman twice was named to the All New England High School Cross Country Team, finishing 17th in 2011 and 24th in 2012. Bowman also won 3 different KVAC indoor track championships, including the mile in 2014 and the 2 mile championship in 2012 and 2014 and was named to the 2012 All State Indoor Track Team. This past spring Brittany won the KVAC 1600-meter and 3200-meter Championship at the Outdoor Track meet. Brittany is currently attending Tufts where she is running Cross Country and Track.

Brooke Dugan was a standout field hockey, basketball and softball player for the Mariners and helped lead each squad to the Eastern Maine playoffs. Dugan was a key member of the Oceanside Field Hockey team that has become a perennial playoff team and was a KVAC All Conference selection. Dugan was also 4 year member of basketball team and was a key member of the Mariners’ softball team where she was part of the 2013 State Championship team while being selected 2nd team All Conference. During her senior year, Dugan was named team MVP,1st team all conference and KVAC Player of the Year. Brooke is currently playing field hockey at Wheaton College.

Abby Hersom ran for the Mariners cross country and track squads and played softball. Hersom was the KVAC Champion and Runner of the Year in Cross Country during her senior season while qualifying for the New England Championships in both 2010 and 2013. Hersom was also an All KVAC selection in indoor track, was the 1600-meter State Runner Up in 2011 and qualified for the New England Individual Championship in 2011, 2012 and 2013. She was also a member of the Oceanside State Championship Softball team in 2013. Abby is currently running Cross Country for Stonehill College.

Rebekah Hilt was a member of the Windjammers mountain bike, basketball and softball teams. Hilt was part of the 2-time State Champions Mountain Bike teams that captured the title in 2012 and 2013, and she finished first among all females in the Maine State Champions in 2012. Hilt also played 3 year of Varsity Basketball and played in the KVAC Senior All Star basketball gamen and last season was a 2nd team All KVAC softball player. Rebekah also served as team captain for all 3 teams during her senior year and she is currently attending the University of Maine.

Bailey Plourde is currently a Sophomore at Lincoln Academy where she golfs and plays basketball for the Eagles. Plourde was an All KVAC selection for boys golf and as a Freshman she was the girls High School Co-Champions. Plourde also tied for 3rd at the Women’s Maine Amateur Golf Championship and 39th at the New England Women’s Amateur Championship this summer. She was also the Maine State Junior Golf Champion in 2013. And just last week,Bailey shot a 75 to finish tied for second in the Class A State Individual Golf Championships

2014 MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR FINALISTS

Camden Hills has dominated the award, as over the 1st 6 years, six of the 7 Male High School Midcoast Athletes of the Year have been Windjammers … Sam Smith in 2008, Kiefer Lammi in 2009, Tyler McFarland, our only repeat winner in 2010 and 2011 and Adam Carlsen in 2012, and last year our first tie, with Alex Crans of Camden Hills and Jordan Friedland of Lincoln Academy sharing the honor.

The 5 nominated male student athletes include Connor Graffam of Camden HIlls, Seward Matel of Lincoln Academy, Nick Mazurek of Oceanside, Ben Trapani of Camden Hills and Micah Williamson of Medomak Valley.

Connor Graffam was a 3 sports athlete for the Windjammers, playing football, basketball and baseball. Graffam was the MVP for football, was selected 2nd team All Conference and played in the Maine Shrine Lobster Football Classic. Graffam was a member of the Windjammers tournament basketball team and averaged 6.9 points a game and was the teams top rebounder. During the baseball season, Connor was the team MVP, selected 1st team All Conference, hitting .431 for the season with 3 Home Runs and 19 RBIs while posting a 5-3 record on the mound with a 2.17 ERA, striking out 68 in 48 and 1/3 innings and was selected to play in the East-West Senior All Star Baseball game. Connor is currently attending Husson University and will play baseball for the Eagles.

Seward Matel golfed, played basketball and ran track for the Eagles. Matel was a 4 time All KVAC golfer, helping lead Lincoln to two KVAC team championships while winning an individual league title, and twice finished 2nd in the State Individual Golf Championships, and 3 times participated in the New England Golf Championship. During the basketball season Seward averaged a double-double for the Eagles and during the track season, Matel four times helped set a school record in the 4-X-800 relay. He was named Lincoln Academy MVP in all 3 sports during his senior year and won the Lowell F Simmons Award for Excellence in Athletics and Citizenship. Seward is currently attending Stanford.

Nick Mazurek, a junior at Oceanside High School, excels in golf, basketball and baseball for the Mariners. As one of the top local golfers, Mazurek was selected to the All State Boys Golf team and qualified for the New England High School Golf Championship and finished 18th overall. He was only underclassman to start for the basketball team and averaged 6.5 points for the Mariners that finished #1 in Eastern Maine Class B. On the baseball diamond, Mazurek was the KVAC Player of the Year and for a second straight year a KVAC 1st Team All Conference and he has twice played in the Maine High School Undergrad Baseball All Star game. Last season Nick hit .460 with 5 Home Runs and 24 RBIs while on the mound he was 6-2 with a 1.84 ERA, struck out 60 in 49-1/3 innings and fired a no-hitter against Medomak Valley. Last week Nick shot a 72 to win the Class A individual Golf State Championship, sharing the title with Bangor’s Drew Powell.

Ben Trapani is one of the top runners from the area and had great success for the Windjammers cross country, indoor track and outdoor track teams, receiving all conference honors and winning individual KVAC titles in all 3 sports. In Cross Country Trapani won the KVAC Championship twice, and in 2012 finished 2nd in Eastern Maine Class B and 3rd in the State Championship Meet. During the 2014 Indoor Track Season he won 800 and 1600 Meter KVAC titles and he won the 3200 meter title in 2012. And during the outdoor track season, Trapani was the State runner up in the 800 meter during 2014, 1600 meter event in 2013 and 14 meets.Ben is currently attending Northeastern University where he is running cross country.

Micah Williamson is a senior at Medomak Valley High School where he is a starter for the Panthers soccer, basketball and baseball teams. Williamson last season was the Team MVP and 2nd team All KVAC selection for the Medomak Valley soccer team. Williamson was the starting point guard for the Panther’s 2013 Eastern Maine Championship Basketball team as he averaged 6 points a game and last season was second in scoring for Medomak’s tournament team, averaging 8.6 points a game. This past season Williamson was one of the top hitters and pitchers for the Panthers baseball team and again was named team MVP and was selected 2nd team all KVAC. Last year Williamson was award his 7 letter jacket from Medomak Valley
