The Midcoast Sports Hall of Fame has announced the 5 male and 4 female finalists for the Hall’s 2012 High School Athlete of the Year. High Schools from within the Midcoast area (Oceanside, Camden Hills, Medomak Valley, Lincoln Academy, Vinalhaven, North Haven and Islesboro) were asked to nominate 2 male and 2 female students-athletes for the honor. The finalists were recently selected by the Midcoast Hall of Fame’s Board of Directors after considering a number of student athletes for the honor.
The five male finalists include Adam Carlsen of Camden Hills, Jordan Friedland of Lincoln Academy, Alex Greenrose of Medomak Valley, Steven Osgood of Vinalhaven and Brian Stanley of Vinalhaven.
The four female finalists are Rosemary McGeady of Oceanside, Sarah Steele of Camden Hills, Alanna Vose of Medomak Valley and Allison Ward of Oceanside.
The candidates were asked to complete a questionnaire and return it to the board to be considered for the honor. Any candidate who did not return the questionnaire was not considered for the award.
Carlsen was a member of the Camden Hills basketball and baseball teams, helping lead both squads to the Eastern Maine Tournament. Carlsen led the Windjammers basketball team in scoring as he was named a Maine McDonald’s All-Star as well as KVAC 1st team All-Star. He was also a key member of the 2011 Class B State Championship basketball team. Carlsen was named a KVAC 2nd team All-Star in baseball and was a KVAC All Academic team member for both sports.
Friedland specialized in tennis at Lincoln Academy and he captured the Maine High School singles Champion, going undefeated during 2012. He was also selected the High School Player of the Year by the Maine Sunday Telegram and did not lose a regular season match during his sophomore, junior and senior seasons.
Greenrose was a member of the Medomak Valley golf, basketball and baseball teams and was selected for the KVAC All Conference squad in Golf and 2nd team All Conference in basketball. Greenrose led the Panthers in points scored and helped carry Medomak to the 2012 KVAC basketball championship.
Osgood played on the Vinalhaven soccer, basketball and baseball teams, and was named an East- West Conference All Star for all 3 sports. Osgood was the MVP of the basketball team that he led in scoring, and this spring he was named 2012 East-West Conference Male Athlete of the Year, and was a key member of the Vikings 2011 Western Maine Class D basketball runners-up team.
Stanley played on the Vinalhaven soccer, basketball and baseball teams, and was the MVP for soccer, an East West Conference All Star for basketball and the Most Valuable Pitcher for the baseball team. Stanley was a member of the 2011 Vikings’ basketball team that advanced to the Western Maine Class D Championship Game
McGeady was a member of the Oceanside soccer, indoor track and tennis teams and was a KVAC All Academic Team member for Indoor Track was selected of the Coaches Award winner for tennis. McGeady was a member of the 2009 Georges Valley State Championship soccer team.
Steele played basketball and softball at Camden Hills, where she was 4 year member of each varsity team. Steele was a captain for both teams and was selected a KVAC 1st team Softball All Star this past season.
Vose was a member of the Medomak Valley soccer, basketball and track teams, but was most successful on the hardwood, where she eclipsed the 1,000 career point mark, while being named the KVAC Player of the Year, a Maine McDonald’s All Star and to the Bangor Daily News 2nd Team All-State squad. During her career, Vose broke 6 school records and tied 2 others. She also set 3 school records in track this past spring.
Ward participated in field hockey, indoor track and tennis at Oceanside excelled on and off the field. In field hockey Ward was First Team KVAC All Star and was named to the Maine Field Hockey Association All State Team. Ward was a KVAC All Academic Team member for all 3 sports
