11/14/2012 - Well, ladies and gentlemen, she made it! Here's the evidence - a quick link to an interview by the local TV station in Manhatten Beach CA, a heart-felt thank you from Rae and a family picture with the Manhattan Beach pier in the background.
L to R: Michael (dad), Kendall, Delaney, Rae, Eden, Lesleh and Eric.
09/22/2012 - Rae has departed Grand Junction, CO and is headed across Utah towards California and her destination, Manhattan Beach. Take a look at this map. Some tough terrain coming up! Due to the scarcity of good stopover possibilities, she will be accompanied by an RV across much of Utah. You can keep up with her on her website, Facebook and Tumblr. If you'd like to help by donating to Soles4Souls or to her trip expenses, here's how.

Update! Rae has traversed Nebraska and is now in Wyoming (see the second map, below). Huge thanks to all who hosted her. She is now looking to rent an RV for Rae's last two months on the road. Lesleh: "Towns are spread so far apart in Utah we want to have a host vehicle waiting for Rae every 15 miles or so. Got quote of 5000 from Des Moines business for 2 months 1 week, wondering if anyone has suggestions for better deal or one we can rent! Does not need to be huge...thanks for your consideration!" Please contact Lesleh if you can help.

Rae needs your help!
Rae Heim, daughter of OI coxswain, Lesleh Heim (see below), has been on a week-long break in her home town of Carroll IA and is about to press on to the West coast through Nebraska and Colorado. Stops have been planned as far as Grand Junction CO but many of those stops still need a host family to house her for one or more nights. Can you or your friends help? If so please contact Lesleh. Here's a link to Rae's itinerary. See below for a rough map of her route and stops (subject to change) and further below for her full story and links to relevant web sites.

Rae Heim (right), the daughter of Lesleh Heim (left), one of our coxswains at 2011 MN and at this year's MN and FISA, has been in the news a lot lately as she runs across the country. She started in Boston April 1st and is currently in Des Moines Iowa having logged some 1,200 miles to date. She plans to reach Huntington Beach CA in November. So far, nothing all that earth shattering, right? But Rae is 18 years old and is doing it barefoot!! On occasion, gravelly roads or hot asphalt, she will wear a pair of minimalist "barefoot" shoes but the great majority of the time she is running barefoot and doing it with no entourage, just a backpack and many friends and friends of friends who host her at each of her stops. Appropriately, she is running to support Soles4Soles, a non-profit that provides shoes to people in need in over 127 countries (including this one).
Take a look!

"It's a great art is rowing. It's the finest art there is. It's symphony of motion. When you're doing well, why its nearing perfection. And when you reach perfection you're touching the divine. It touches the you of you which is your soul." George Pocock

"People who row find it rewarding in lots of ways that you might not suspect. I'm convinced that most of the rowers that I know feel a spiritual element in it. They're people who are enjoying a moment of inner tranquility and peace of mind that comes perhaps from no other activities I can think of. When I look out there on the water, I see a whole society of people who've discovered something particularly wonderful and important, something that they will do the rest of their lives."
