This server came about as a result of a machine that had reached EOL. It used to be the home desktop for 10+ years, but after the loss of WIN7 support, it slowly started to falter. An attempt to use Win10 failed as majority of the hardware didn't meet the minimum requirements for Win10. In the end, the attempt to use Linux Mint on the machine seemed to bring some life into it, but it too had limitations due to the age of the hardware. So instead of tossing it, the descision was made to make it into another server using OMV. This one is just a simple file storage server...no bells or whistles. It will comprise of hard drives recycled from the HTPC and BES, and maybe a couple drives from Speilberg that are slowly being replaced.
The main purpose of this server will act as a file storage system for the kids to backup their data/pictures too, hence the name "Swiftie", named after their favorite artist.
This pre-built system was a computer I picked up from previous employment when they were holding auctions on older equipment. The computer is equipped with a Q9400 Core2 Quad CPU, 6 Gigs memory (expandable to 16 Gigs), mounted on an Intel Q45 Express motherboard. It has integrated Intel 82567LM GigLAN and 4 on-board SATA ports.
The main system drive is a new Lexar SSD NS100 128GB. The SSD includes DRAM cache and should perform for many years. The hard drives in the system are pulls from the HTPC and BES and eventually Spielberg for new drives. Not quite sure as to what to use for a RAID configuration, but all drives will be set up with xfs file system (except for the OMV system partition).
OMV is an open source server and is the next generation network attached storage (NAS) solution based on Debian Linux.
OMV is primarily designed to be used in small offices or home offices, but is not limited to those scenarios.
So the system has been running with only the OS drive installed. Planning on adding the HTPC and BES drives to the system, and then officially take it live.
