I am currently an instructor for University Seminar, US 1100, a course required of first year students at Texas State University. The course focuses on a number of topics, including the Common Reader, Major and Career Exploration, and campus resource awareness. The students complete three major "PACE Assignments" focusing on self-exploration, career and major exploration, and making plans for academics and involvement in order to reach career and educational goals.
I have taught this course in Fall 2015, Fall 2016, Spring 2017, Fall 2017, and Spring 2018.
I am the only instructor for my section of the course, but I work closely with a student peer mentor who meets with students individually regarding their development as students during their first semester.
One of my assignments, a Shared Legacy Short Story that ties into the 2015-2016 Common Experience theme: "Bridged Through Stories: Shared Heritage of the United States and Mexico, an Homage to Dr. Tomás Rivera," was featured in the US 1100 Instructor's Guide. Though the Guide itself is password protected so that only instructors my view its resources, I have attached a copy of the assignment in a separate file on this web site for your reference.
I was instructor for EDUC 2112, Residence Life Leadership Skills, a course required of new Resident Assistants and offered to alternates for the position and other interested students. The course began by discussing Student Affairs theories, addressed incidents and concerns Resident Assistants might encounter during their work, and concluded with an examination of leadership as a discipline. Major assignments included a cultural immersion project, a group project where students presented original designs for residence halls, and a paper where students articulated their leadership philosophy and how it affected their roles as student leaders. I also oversaw an independent study for a student who was not able to attend the class at its scheduled time.
I taught the class during the Fall 2013 semester. For complete information on timelines and assignments, see the attached syllabus.
I co-taught the course with an Associate Director of Residence Life. Though I worked with a senior colleague, responsibilities were evenly divided and we collaborated to develop the syllabus, grade assignments and complete tasks related to the course.
