Cultural Sensitivity Education and Training
We must educate ourselves about world affairs as we face the challenges created by cultural diversity, homeland security, and the global marketplace. The events of Sept. 11 have only served to underscore the importance of cultural diversity education and training.
In our post-9/11 world, understanding and awareness of people from diverse cultural backgrounds are increasingly important to the security and prosperity of our nation and world.
Cultural diversity training and education are important due to the following factors:
Population
Demographic Realities in the U.S.
Increased Migration and Traveling
Globalization
Global marketing and business
More International Trade
Technological Advances
Modern Means of Communication
More e-mail and Internet
Government regulations
Federal Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Laws
Culture affects everything we do. This applies to all areas of human life from personal relationships to conducting business abroad. When interacting with our native cultures, culture acts as a framework of understanding. However, when interacting with different cultures this framework no longer applies due to cross-cultural differences.
Cross-cultural communication aims to help minimize the negative impact of cross-cultural differences by building common frameworks for people of different cultures to interact within. In business, cross-cultural solutions are applied in areas such as HR, team building, foreign trade, negotiations, and website design.
The foreign-born population of the United States exceeds 33 million. This consumer segment is growing exponentially and offers great marketing opportunities for lawyers, accountants, Realtors, and providers of other professional services who pay attention to its needs.
Look around, and you’ll see that the makeup of the American population is changing. Growing numbers of both immigrants and citizens of Latin American, Asian American, and African American descent are creating an increasingly diverse population in the United States.
