Chapter Summary:
We expect that using the preventive antecedent techniques described throughout this text, and the reinforcement-based consequence strategies described in Chapters 10 and 11, preventive antecedent techniques and reinforcement-based consequence strategies will solve many behavioral problems that teachers encounter. However, sometimes these approaches are insufficient to prevent or control a particularly challenging behavior. In this chapter, we described how educators should determine when a more direct approach to dealing with a challenging behavior is needed, and we explained specific strategies for reducing or eliminating challenging behaviors
Chapter Objectives:
Define nonpunishment and punishment techniques.
Describe IDEA’s disciplinary provisions and zero-tolerance policies.
Define zero tolerance and describe the problems that arise when zero-tolerance policies are applied.
Describe the guidelines for judicious and ethical use of behavior reductive interventions.
Describe the hierarchy of behavior reductive strategies.
Describe how to implement each strategy correctly and ethically, and explain which strategies conform to a PBIS philosophy and which do not.
Chapter Activities:
1. Watch the video Death at School: Parents Protest Dangerous Discipline.
Answer the following questions:
How do the disciplinary tactics described in the video differ from the methods you have learned in this chapter? Cite specific examples of differences.
What are educators’ options if they have a child who exhibits such extremely challenging behavior that traditional discipline methods are ineffective at preventing or reducing the challenging behavior?
How would you respond if you were in a school where some of the practices described in this video were used with a student?
