Chapter Summary:
Schoolwide PBIS is an exciting and effective response to the problems of school violence, disruptive behavior, high levels of disciplinary actions, and poor school climate. SW-PBIS extends and expands the successes of behavioral science, especially applied behavior analysis, to making schools more effective for all students.
Chapter Objectives:
Explain schoolwide positive behavioral interventions and supports (SW-PBIS), including the rationale for schoolwide PBIS and its philosophy.
Describe the critical attributes of SW-PBIS systems.
Describe research support for SW-PBIS.
Describe and give examples of the essential features of SW-PBIS, including universal and targeted levels.
Describe the steps for planning and implementing an SW-PBIS program.
Describe assessment and monitoring methods for universal and targeted levels.
Chapter Activities:
1. Watch the video Discovering Schoolwide PBIS: Moving Toward a Positive Future.
Write three to five schoolwide rules. Define those rules for one or more areas of the school and develop reminders that will help students to remember the expectations.
2. Using the rules developed in the preceding activity, develop an acknowledgment system to reinforce students for following the rules.
