Chapter Summary:
In this chapter, we explained the technique of functional behavioral assessment, which is the process of gathering and analyzing data for the purpose of determining the conditions under which problem behavior is likely to occur and the functions of that problem behavior. This enables IEP teams or other planning teams to develop BIPs that have a higher probability of desired behavior change outcomes than intervention plans developed without functional assessment data.
Chapter Objectives:
Explain functional behavioral assessment (FBA) and the legal requirements for FBA.
Distinguish between functional analysis and functional assessment.
Describe indirect and direct assessment methods of data collection to help identify when, where, and why challenging behavior occurs.
Use the results of FBA to develop behavioral intervention plans (BIPs).
Describe the potential problems with and cautions regarding FBA.
Chapter Activities:
1. Complete the Functional Behavioral Assessment: Identifying the Reasons for Problem Behavior and Developing a Behavior Plan Module.
