Turkish governor keeps priest out of VIP section during rally
Hurriyet Daily news; April 10 2012
Edirne Gov. Gökhan Sözer yesterday refused to admit Bulgarian Orthodox Priest Alexander Çıkırık into the official VIP section during a rally held in the northwestern province to call attention to the problems facing the historical Selimiye Mosque.
“Let them stay put. Do they seat our muftis and [imams] by their side in Bulgaria?” Sözer reportedly told officials who attempted to lead Çıkırık into the VIP section.
Çıkırık attended the event to lend his support to the rally, alongside Nadi Ersoy, the former imam of the Selimiye Mosque. Çıkırık’s name was called aloud, and officials attempted to bring the two clerics to the VIP section, but Sözer intervened and thwarted the move, according to reports.
Inverted Tulip Motifs At Selimiye Mosque In Need Of Protection
Today's Zaman; January 17 2012
Rare inverted tulip motifs embossed on the marble pillars of the muezzin's balcony in Edirne's Selimiye Mosque, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List last June, will be protected.
Speaking in an interview with the Anatolia news agency on Monday, Nadi Ersoy, the retired imam of the historic mosque, said the rare motifs are growing increasingly faint due to a combination of age and people rubbing them, adding that if they are not protected in the near future, there is a high risk they will disappear completely.
Ersoy, who worked as an imam, muezzin and guide at the Selimiye for 41 years, said the unique and subtle motifs have always caught the eye of visitors and that after touring the historic building he was often approached by tourists and locals alike and asked about the nature and background of the motifs.
