Over two thousand years old and still operational
Sandra Scott; Examiner; April 22 2012
A must-see when visiting Chengdu, China is the Dujiangyan Irrigation Project. It is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Dujiangyan Irrigation Project is 2,200 years old and eliminated seasonal flooding of the Minjiang River and is still used to irrigate the land. The project is considered one of the Treasures of Sichuan and today plays a crucial role in flood control, irrigation and providing water to many cities. The long walkway from the entrance to river has a beautiful fountain and is attractively landscaped. Along the walkway there are places that show how the original dam was constructed by using rocks held in place by mesh-like weavings originally made of natural fibers and later of metal.
The site is large but a trolley takes visitors up to the Yuzui Water-dividing Dike with an expansive view of the spill water area and the large gates that control the water flow. The river can be crossed via the Couple’s Bridge which is one of the Five Ancient Bridges of China. The current version resembles the 1803 bridge with a wooden plank floor and bamboo rails. While the bridge is sturdy and safe it does undulate giving it a swinging bridge experience that adds a little excitement to the crossing.
The Dujiangyan Irrigation Project can be visited on a day tour that also includes an historic pagoda, a scenic mountain Taoist complex, and an Ancient Village which is a large, beautifully built village that replicates an ancient village.

The festival will run until April 12.

Grandma Jiang spends so much of The Vanishing Spring Light wishing to die, it comes as a shock when the chain-smoking elderly matriarch does just that in Montreal-based Chinese filmmaker Xun “Fish” Yu’s award-winning doc.
Born around the time of Mao’s Long March, Grandma Jiang bought a tiny house on a former branch of the ancient Silk Road called West St. in what is now a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in the city of Dujiangyan in Sichuan province.

Thousands view re-enactment of traditional water release
Ante Simonic, Croatian ambassador to China, was impressed when workers cut the ropes to release rafts blocking the water in the Minjiang River in Dujiangyan, Sichuan province, releasing a torrent from the mighty river into the fertile Chengdu Plain.
"It's so amazing that the Dujiangyan Irrigation Project is still in operation after more than 2,000 years and benefits people. It represents China's 5,000-year-old civilization," he told China Daily.
Water-releasing Ceremony Opens at Dujiangyan
By DingXiaoXiao; Shanghai Daily; April 5 2012
A man fastens bamboo ropes to a tree trunk after the ropes holding a cofferdam were cut loose during the water-releasing ceremony in Dujiangyan on Qingming Festival on Wednesday.
Dating back to 978 AD at the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, a UNESCO world cultural heritage site, in southwestern China Sichuan Province, the water-releasing ceremony, an annual event laden with rituals, heralds the advent of the sowing and plowing season in spring after a temporary cofferdam was built in the dry season in winter to block out the Minjiang River waters so that maintenance works can be done on the irrigation system.
