Destination Roros completes double of top world awards
TravelMole; April 17 2012
Winners of the top destination at the 2011 Responsible Tourism awards win the prestigious global Tourism for Tomorrow Award.
Said the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC): "Their successful multi-stakeholder approach to creating a thriving sustainable tourism destination in the old mining town of Røros, a UNESCO World Heritage Site is an example for many to follow."
"Since the end of mining in the late 1970’s, Destination Røros has been instrumental in reversing the area’s environmental degradation, guided by a management plan that actively engages and builds cooperation among local communities, municipal authorities, and private sector stakeholders. "
Norwegian town lives from the ore of yore

A tall, dark mountain towers over Roros, one of the best-known small towns in Norway, but this is no regular topographical feature. The hill, which offers the best view of the town, is a slag heap left over from more than three centuries of copper mining.
The baroque grandeur of the octagonal stone church with its 50-metre-tall belltower also stands witness to the community's affluent past. Copper was mined around this eastern town for exactly 333 years and from 1646 onwards it was smelted in Roros too.
Legend has it that the seam of natural resources was only discovered by chance. Local farmer and hunter Hans Olsen Aasen bagged a reindeer which crashed to the ground, digging up with its hoof a piece of bright stone as it struggled against death - the rock was a chunk of ore.
