Grades 4 - 5, Grades 6 - 8: "Ophelia Delphinium Fidgets is a Granter - a fairy with the ability to grant human wishes. She is selected to go on her first assignment and is over confident at the beginning, but soon realizes this is not as easy as she anticipated. Hit by a passenger jet, sprayed with a fire extinguisher, swung at with a broom, and that was just in the first few hours! She makes an unlikely friend along the way who helps her reach her destination. But when it is time to grant the wish, she is faced with a dilemma. Does she follow the path the Great Tree made for her, or does she do what she feels is right in her heart? I do wish the book's text was in slightly larger font." student, Joelle Iverson, vetted by Debby Iverson. While the book is intended for elementary readers, and the vocabulary isn't difficult (other than some names), the smaller font may deter some readers.
Verdict: A humorous story that will especially appeal to upper elementary girls.

Vaccination Investigation: The History and Science of Vaccines
Author: Haelle, Tara
Illustrator: NA
Twenty-First Century Books, 2018
ISBN: 9781512425307
$27.99
Grades 9 - 12: This little book is an excellent resource for anyone interested in the history or science of vaccines. Photographs, diagrams and infographics help to clarify and explain this complex topic. The first line of the book helps to illustrate the gravity of the diseases vaccines have helped to “wipe out”: as a young doctor, James Cherry remembers what happened where he worked when the hospital’s power failed. Everyone on staff rushed to the iron lungs where polio survivors were kept alive. It took two people on each lung to keep the patient inside breathing and alive. Told in four chapters, with a glossary, further information, index and source notes, this book is a gold mine of information, right up to the re-emergence of measles in Disneyland in 2014. Chapter four focuses on the “push back” against vaccines with solid science, the psychology of “cognitive bias,” and explaining the difference between correlation and causation. She gives poignant examples of death and regret throughout history when people let their emotions, pseudo-science and misinformation get the better of facts. Even Benjamin Franklin learned the price of skepticism when he refused to take advantage of a vaccine and lost his son, in 1736, to smallpox. The author recognizes the dangers of vaccines but also makes the case for embracing their effectiveness as new diseases become widespread in our ever more connected world. This is a good book to have on your shelves as a reliable resource we see more and more examples of “fake news.” I learned a lot from this fascinating book. Verdict: Easy to read non-fiction, great for outside read for science and current events classes.
Curricular Use: Use for research or read excerpts for current world problems classes. Valuable as a history and a science resource.

Seeing into Tomorrow
Author: Crews, Nina
Illustrator: Crews, Nina
Millbrook Press, 2018
ISBN: 9781512418651
$19.99
Grades 1 - 3: Seeing into Tomorrow is an all too brief collection of Haiku written by the famous writer, Richard Wright. Totally unaware of his poetic leanings (this African American is best know for his novel, Native Son) I was charmed by these impressionistic bits and pieces. His Haiku makes poetry accessible to the young mind. Ms. Crew's photo collage imagery playfully accompanies the poems. She also includes a concise biography of Mr. Wright after the collection. Verdict: Though I feel the 19.99 price tag is bit steep for a child's short picture book, the book itself is a wonderful introduction to the often illusive world of poetry.
Curricular Use: The Haiku in this book can be used as examples of poetry when initiating a child to reading and writing poetry.

The Underground Railroad
Author: Cummings, Judy Dodge
Illustrator: Casteel, Tom
Nomad Press, 2017
ISBN: 978161930491
$17.95
Grades 4 - 5, Grades 6 - 8: This cross-disciplinary book is a treatise on American Slavery from its inception to beyond its end. Throughout the book the reader follows a specific story of one man helping his family to escape; different approaches of each state towards slavery; those who helped and those who hindered the process of eradicating the practice of owning others; a glossary every few pages; and many hands on activities to help the reader understand the lives of the slaves. Well written, comprehensive text includes sidebars and fact tidbits to further explain the attitudes and culture of the times slavery existed here. Verdict: Though the subject matter is very specific, The Underground Railroad: Navigate the Journey from Slavery to Freedom is an excellent text to have.
Curricular Use: This book can be used as a primary text (or a supplementary source) for any class on American History, Civil Rights, Black History, Sociology, and many others. Many of the activities presented would work well in the classroom.

The Dangerous Art of Blending In
Author: Surmelis, Angelo
Illustrator: NA
Balzer + Bray, 2018
ISBN: 9780062659002
$17.99
Grades 9 - 12: "The Dangerous Art of Blending In" is a book that stays with you days after you finish reading it. It's powerful. And painful. And distressing. And heartbreaking. And inspiring. A recurring theme in YA literature is invisibility. Being a ghost in your surroundings and in your own life, not being seen, disappearing. The theme, of course, always relates to deeper, painful underlying feelings and events experienced by the characters. Seventeen-year-old Evan tries his best to just blend in at home, at church, at school, every where. He has secrets that he must keep. 1. He is gay. 2. His horribly abusive, manipulative, controlling mother has been verbally, emotionally and physically beating him since he was five years old. 3. His father does nothing to stop the abuse that his mentally unstable wife wields on their son. 4. He is in love with his best friend, Henry. Evan tries his best to be a perfect son (which he is!), but his mother constantly finds fault with him, and either berates and then savagely beats him at home, or whispers horrible things under her breath to him when they are in public ("I wish you were dead." "Those pants make you look like a prostitute." "You are evil.") His parents are Old World Greek immigrants, and his mother is a homophobic, overly-zealous religious fanatic who is more concerned about appearances and what others think. Evan describes the beatings and abuse in journals that he keeps locked in a box buried near an old monastery. Unfortunately, the notebooks end up in Evan's mother's possession. She not only rips up all of his drawings, she also gives the notebooks to their pastor for him to read about her son. Voula (Evan's mom) unwittingly provides the pastor with a detailed account of the 13 years of abuse Evan has endured at her hands. When the secrets are gradually revealed, as all secrets are, Evan realizes for the first time in his life that he is not all of the horrible things his mother has called him. He learns he is important and that he is truly loved for who he is. I liked the relationship Evan had with his dad, although I wished his dad would have stood up for Evan and stopped the abuse much earlier in Evan's life. I liked the relationship Evan and Henry developed. Friendship first, growing to love and a deep respect for each other. While I wish Voula had been prosecuted for her criminal acts against Evan, I am glad the secret of the abuse as well as the secret of Evan's sexuality were finally revealed. This was a bit of poetic justice. Evan can move forward with his life in a healthy, safe way. The book is hard to read in places, because of the graphic nature of the violence. This may not be suitable for younger readers. There is a sexual language/a sex scene, as well as rough language. Again, probably not appropriate for younger readers. There is a list of LGBTQ Organizations, the National Child Abuse Hotline number, and links to Bullying websites located in the Author's Note at the end of the book. An important addition to the book. Verdict: Read this book! I highly recommend this book for the timely content, and the realism. The book is loosely based upon the author's real-life experiences, which just adds to the impact.
Curricular Use: Independent reading. Classroom discussions about sexuality, bullying, homophobia, domestic violence, relationships,

Ten Magic Butterflies
Author: McKellar, Danica
Illustrator: Jennifer Bricking
Penguin Random House/Crown, 2018
ISBN: 9781101933824
$17.99
P - K, Grades 1 - 3: Is it a math story? Is it a fairy story? The blending of both makes it a valuable addition to any collection. This is the story of ten flowers who become dissatisfied with being flowers. They want to fly. After petitioning a fairy, they are transformed one by one into butterflies. Each page contains a different grouping of the ten until, at the end, the butterflies realize that they were actually much happier being flowers. Fortunately, rather than rolling her eyes and scolding them for ignoring her suggestion that they might find "the grass is greener," the fairy simply returns them to their flower form. Notes to grandparents and parents at the end provides an explanation of the author's choices to introduce the concept of grouping as well as a plug for her website where parents can purchase more books and watch YouTube Videos about math. Verdict: Despite the shameless plug at the end to build McKellar's brand, this is a good book that pairs poetry, math, and a great life lesson.
Curricular Use: This title has strong connections to the math standards of counting and cardinality as well as operations and algebraic thinking. The beautiful illustrations build print motivation and the poetry with repetition helps students build fluency.

Thank You, Earth

Illustrator: Sayre, April Pulley (photographs)
Greenwillow Books, 2018
ISBN: 9780062697349
$17.99
P - K, Grades 1 - 3: This is a thank you letter to Earth for all its beauty and wonder, be it big or tiny, colorful or pale, noisy or quiet. There is an interesting unity between the photographs in that each one tends to have a palette of only two or three colors which somehow ties them all together. The words are thoughtful, the presentation is quiet and rhythmic. Verdict: Thank You, Earth is a wonderful acknowledgement of what Earth's natural beauty gives us. It would be a great addition for libraries and classrooms.
Curricular Use: The book is a wonderful gateway to discussions about nature, Earth, and things we love. There are two pages at the back of the book which can be used as guides for conservation projects along with other ideas the adult can use to assist the child in expressing their own love of the planet they live on.

Her father is the head of the president’s security detail. At age ten, they’re waiting for a White House party to start and interrupt Russians who are trying to kidnap Logan’s mother. Maddy’s father is shot, Logan is shot and their lives change forever. Logan and Maddy’s dad recover, but suddenly Maddy is forced to move to a remote Alaska location and spend the next six years, offline, learning about survival and writing countless letters to Logan. Author: Haas, Jessie

Boyds Mills, 2018
ISBN: 9781629798806
$17.95
Grades 4 - 5, Grades 6 - 8: Joni’s plans for the summer are changed when a new girl shows up in her last week of 6th grade. Chess has never lived on a farm before, and announces she’s vegan, and believes that animals shouldn’t be held captive, not even the sheep Joni’s dad milks to make cheese. At the same time she admires Joni’s rascally pony Archie, and adores her cat’s new kittens. Joni is not sure how friendship with a junior animal rights activist neighbor is going to work, especially when Chess wants to “rescue” the miniature horses from the lady who lives down the road from them. Joni is trying to balance Chess’s new perspectives with why her family’s farm life should continue as always. Meanwhile there are chores, an older sister to reconnect with, separation from her school friends, and Archie still disobeys way too often with 4-H riding camp starting soon. Then just after Joni gets a valuable horsemanship lesson from the mini horse owner, Chess carries out her plan to “liberate” the minis with disastrous results. Haas does a good job with Joni and Chess’s conflicting emotions, and as usual her horse facts and behaviors are spot on. (Especially the ease for a mini to overeat and founder.) Also it is refreshing to see the loving and supportive relationship between Joni and her family, rather than conflict. Verdict: A good coming-of-age read for both horse lovers and friendship story fans.

Vincent and Theo: The Van Gogh Brothers
Author: Heiligman, Deborah
Illustrator: NA
Godwin Books, 2017
ISBN: 9780805093391
$$19.99
Grades 9 - 12: This is an interesting approach to a memoir, told about the pair of Vincent Van Gogh and his brother Theo. Theo was the younger brother but he supported his older brother Vincent through his lifetime as he first struggled to find his calling and later as he studied art and became a painter. The book is divided into parts that are divided into the parts of an art gallery. The threshold is where the story begins. Then there is the “entresol” which is the mezzanine floor, and significant because initially that is only place where the impressionist artists could be displayed. Then the galleries take us through the “beginnings,” “endings and beginnings,” “passions,” “expanded palettes,” etc. The brothers wrote letters to each other all their lives so much of the story can be told in their own words. They came from a close family with a strict preacher for a father. This book is a frank discussion of the fallout from visiting brothels and blow by blow accounts of dealing with mental illness, but it also tells about the development of artistic genius. Detailed, brutal, sweet, the story covers Vincent’s life, and the undying support from his brother Theo. There is a timeline in the back of the book, a “glossary” of the people involved, an author’s note, endnotes and an index. There are color plates of some of the paintings. It felt long to me, partly because of the cyclical nature of Vincent’s mental illness, but it was an interesting read. I learned a lot. Verdict: A worthy addition to your biography and memoir shelves.
Curricular Use: Useful for art students researching art styles. Memoir and biography assignments.

$17.99
P - K, Grades 1 - 3: In this unique bio of Jane Austen's life the author focused on the elements that led to the kind of books Jane wrote. Jane's world was small and social so she observed that world closely, and with great humor wrote about the behavior of the people around her. Included at the back are brief summaries of her books and a timeline of her all-too-brief life as well as the published dates of her books. The line and wash illustrations are similar to the kind of artwork that a young woman of that time was expected to be able to draw. Verdict: It is always wonderful to have books introducing the young reader to writers they may enjoy when they get older. This charming little biography would make a fine addition to the shelves.

Author: Kelly, Jacqueline
Illustrator: Jennifer L. Meyer
Henry Holt, 2017
ISBN: 9781627798730
$15.99
Grades 4 - 5: In this chapter book for young readers, Calpurnia battles Victorian-era sensibilities to exercise her scientific interest in animals, birds, and fossils. When her Granddaddy is willing to help by taking her out in a leaky old row boat she christened "Beagle" (after Darwin's craft), they encounter a young barn owl who has plopped into the stream next to them. Her butterfly net comes in handy to rescue the bird, and they take it to the local veterinarian, who Calpurnia has helped in the past. With no obvious reason for the owl to ditch, Calpurnia borrows a cage and takes the owl home to nurse it to health, but there is still the mystery of what made it ill. Later she hears a man in the store ask for poison to kill mice and makes the connection, taking the antidote recipe to the vet. Lots of information about the habits and usefulness of owls is woven into the story as her Granddaddy educates Calpurnina about her patient, while Meyer's detailed illustrations (reminiscent of naturalist author/illustrator Jim Arnosky) make it difficult to decide whether Calpurnia or the hordes of mice are more charming. Verdict: A girl's interest in science in 1900 helps her to rescue and get treatment for a sick owl in this energetic and amusing elementary chapter book.
Curricular Use: Good for love of reading and to promote young girls' interest in science.

Hello Ruby: Journey Inside the Computer
Author: Liukas, Linda
Illustrator: ?(Webster, Kyle T.)?
Feiwel and Friends (Macmillan), 2017
ISBN: 9781250065322
$16.99
Possibly as young as Grade 2, but best for Grades 3 to 5.: Using a story, logic, and noncomputer activities, Ms. Liukas attempts to introduce one to the inside working world of a computer. She does admirably well, but does skip some points that would make the business much easier to understand (from this adult's viewpoint). However, this colorful book is a good one to begin the familiarization of how a computer works in an age when all kids should have some understanding of what will, either directly or simply as a tool, most likely be crucial to their careers. The activities include logic puzzles and the making of a paper computer which I found confusing at first since it does not function in any way. The author may have intended it to simply familiarize the child with the names of the parts. Most children will need the assistance of a knowledgeable adult to help them through the concepts and questions brought forth. Verdict: Though not the most consistant with the information presented, this edition of Hello Ruby is an excellent title to accompany others on the workings of a computer.
Curricular Use: Hello Ruby: Journey Inside the Computer would work well as a classroom title for 2nd to 5th graders to use with a teacher or other knowledgeable adult to guide them through the concepts and activities presented.

Books! is a lively introduction to, well, books and other printed matter. Malala was born in a culture that favored boys and gave them preferential rights and opportunities. But she was given the name of a historical Pakistani heroine, by her father, who ran a school for boys and girls, and encouraged her to speak out for freedom. Then came the day when her father could not protect her from the nameless "enemy". In deference to the book's audience, a dark wordless page replaces the attack on her life, followed by the words "For seven days, Malala slept and dreamed" over a bird's eye view of a red-headed bird flying over a waterfall in a dark chasm. Malala wakes in an British hospital, still wearing her red head covering over a heavy bandage. From England, where she was free to go to school, she began to travel to places round the world to speak for the rights of girls and boys to live in peace, be treated with dignity, hane equl opportunities, and to be educated. An author's note gives more detailed biographical information, identifying the Taliban as the "enemy", and Malala as the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. P - K, Grades 1 - 3, Grades 4 - 5: Almost wordless this is a fun story, told in pictures. The protagonist arrives with his baseball mitt as teams are being chosen. After some consideration, he is sent to the outfield, but his first attempt at catching the pop fly ends in disaster as he trips on a tree root. The next time it’s a whole tree (with more and more little birds looking on). Finally, he’s ready but as he makes his reach, the rest of his teammates rush in and crowd him out. Then the trickiness happens: he looks on as a tiny person, scales the other kids like they are mountains; through and out and up (more little birds in tow!) and makes the catch. The batter is dismayed, but he and his teammates are overjoyed. Simple and whimsical with book will appeal to all ages, especially during baseball season. My grandson laughed out loud when we read this and couldn't wait to take it to his daycare. As he says it's up to us to "imagine up the words." Verdict: A fun baseball book whose whimsical story and realistic illustrations will delight baseball players of all ages.
