The Great Monkey Rescue

Illustrator: NA
Millbrook Press, 2016
ISBN: 9781467780308
Grades 1 - 3,Grades 4 - 5,Grades 6 - 8: The Great Monkey Rescue is a wonderful introduction to the frustrating world of conservation. Native to Brazil, the Golden Lion Tamarin is a beautiful little monkey that was dying out as its habitat was destroyed. In ten short "chapters" Markle tells the story of a little female tamarin who is seeking habitat and a family group. Colorful sidebars augment the engaging narrative of the struggles zoo keepers and conservationists faced in trying to keep these little critters alive. Lerner suggests the grade levels at 4 - 6, but this has the potential for engaging children much younger than that. This title is a Junior Library Guild selection and was selected a NSTA/CBC Outstanding Science Trade Book for Students K - 12. Verdict: An excellent high-interest addition with multiple curricular opportunities.
Curricular Use: There are several ties to Common Core Standards in Reading and Writing as well as the Next Generation Science Standards specifically pertaining to the study of interdependent relationships in ecosystems. Markle's storytelling tone opens read-aloud possibilities that could be scaffolded for students from K - 5.

ISBN: 9780805099805
Grades 4 - 5,Grades 6 - 8,Grades 9 - 12: “And winters were when her mother was at her worst, her love at its most brittle.” It is cold the day that Sarah’s mother leaves her and her father. For Sarah’s whole life, her family has left together, chasing warmth, and life without her mother is very strange. Sarah meets an older boy called Alan out in the small woods near her house who appears and disappears abruptly and says he’s looking for a bird. Her father is changing, getting hairier and wilder and neglecting his daughter. Suddenly, he whisks her away to live with her grandparents, who she didn’t know existed, in a castle tower in the middle of nowhere. And then: a locked up beast, a talking white raven, a house kept by magic. Sarah’s unraveling her family’s story of an inter-generational curse - and she’s cursed too. “Beastkeeper” is a beautiful book that borrows elements of familiar fairy tales to make something quite unique. With complex characters, murky motivations, and lovely, descriptive prose, the story will make you think twice about what we call fairy-tale love. Verdict: “Beastkeeper” would be a great book club selection and has cross-over appeal for middle-grade readers, teens, and adults.

It’s a fun, silly ride, and the duo’s good sportsmanship and care for their fellow racers means they triumph in the end. The Snowfather’s magic can’t help Sika, who wished for her Grandfather to be well again, but, as he tells her, his stories will never die. Verdict: Delightfully illustrated in black, white, and teal, "Pugs of the Frozen North" is a fun winter story with a sweet message.

ISBN: 9780763679798
Grades 4 - 5: This paperback in the Candlewick Biographies series gives seven short illustrated chapters about the life of Tesla and his struggles to present his inventions to America, especially using alternating current as a better alternative to direct current for the generation and transmission of electricity. Appended are an example of how Tesla's ideas were often far ahead of his time: low-cost wireless transmission, one on Tesla's rivalry with Thomas Edison, scientific notes explaining Tesla's work, a timeline, notes, bibliography, and index. Verdict: Edison's contributions to science have been well documented for children, but Tesla has not received his due. Henry Holt & Company, LLC, 2015
ISBN: 9780805093612
Grades 1 - 3,Grade K: Set in the ocean, the storyline follows a young crab that is having a really bad day and his mother’s intuitive descriptions of how he’s feeling, with confirmation from her that those feelings are okay. Dial Books for Young Readers, 2015
ISBN: 9780803740112
P - K: Two gray squirrels are excited to have their cousin Momo stay for a visit and show off his cool abilities. He is a flying squirrel! But when Momo is shy and plays all their games wrong – eating the acorns used in Acorn-Pong, seeking small plants and bugs to photograph during hide-and-seek, and dressing as the Muffin Man to play superheroes – the two declare they should have invited Stinky George instead. A sad Momo is ready to leave when his cousins have a change of heart and learn that playing Momo’s way can be fun too. OHora’s illustrations are bright and stylized with strong lines that show off the squirrels’ feelings. Momo stands out with his striped sweat bands and sneakers. HarperCollins , 2015
ISBN: 978006211732
Grades 9 - 12: Gray, Bree and a group of Rebels are mounting a final battle to bring down the Franconian Order. Losses are mounting on both sides and it is getting difficult for the rebel group to differentiate between a "Forger" and a "real" human.
To make their work even more difficult, Gray has fallen in love with Bree and will do anything to protect her. Their relationship is tested to the point that they are willing to sacrifice their own lives in battle.
The tide is turning in the fight but the Rebels must trust some "outsiders" that are not 100% loyal to their cause.

Nest

Illustrator: NA
Wendy Lamb Books/Random House , 2014
ISBN: 978-0-385-38607-4
Grades 4 - 5,Grades 6 - 8,Grades 9 - 12: Esther Ehrlich's novel, "Nest," allows one a glimpse into the confusion and complexity of emotions the young girl, Chirp, experiences as her mother's health and well being crumbles. Though Chirp's beloved birds and marshlands help to sustain her, it is her friendship with Joey, the boy across the street, which gives her the support she really needs. The almost elegant writing style is clear and easy to follow. Sensitive and quirky, the characters exhibit their humanness and feelings throughout the pages. Ms Ehrlich illustrates the circumstances with a light and insightful style allowing one to travel through the more challenging moments without getting bogged down. There is no fairy tale ending to this story. However, the conclusion offers a promise of true friendship and a glimpse of the healing to come. Verdict: Perhaps this story is not essential to a smaller, more generalized library, but it would be appreciated by any library frequented by preteen and teenage girls. Unless your demographics warrant this title, limited budgets might nix it.
Curricular Use: Any program addressing loss of family or grief could utilize this book. "Nest" also touches on physical abuse. It would be a beneficial addition to any collection on illness, depression, or death. However, the story is interesting enough to stand on its own.

Eden West
Author: Hautman, Pete
Illustrator: NA
Candlewick Press, 2015
ISBN: 9780763674182
Grades 9 - 12: Every other Tuesday, or Landay, seventeen-year-old Jacob walks the border of the 7800 acres of Montana land he knows as Nodd. Devoted to his isolated religious community of the Graced, Jacob looks forward to marrying soon and to the possibility of tending the sacred tree that grows in the middle of their village. The novel begins with Jacob remembering his encounter with a wolf on the northern border the winter before, a sighting so rare that no one believed him. Jacob continues to sense this literal wolf at the door as his uncertainty with his world is sparked and fanned. First he meets Lynna, a girl who lives at the ranch that borders Nodd. Then a new family joins the Graced, including a boy only a few years younger than Jacob who openly scorns their lifestyle and religion. And finally, old Father Grace, the founder of Nodd, announces his marriage to the girl Jacob always believed he would marry. Jacob’s growing disillusionment is well-paced and believable, and even as faith-shattered events pile up (state officials are bribed during a public inspection, Father Grace goes mad, the sacred tree is poisoned), Hautman provides a more nuanced view than many of the recent crop of religious cult novels through the reactions of secondary characters, notably Jacob’s mother. In a conversation late in the novel, she explains to her son why they joined the Graced and why she’ll stay while at the same time demonstrating that she understands if he needs to leave. Verdict: A thought-provoking coming-of-age novel that explores universal questions of faith and individuality.

Reawakened
Author: Houck, Colleen
Illustrator: NA
Delacorte Press, 2015
ISBN: 9780385376563
Grades 9 - 12: The story begins with a background of ancient Egyptian times and the legend of a people rescued by their worship of Seth, the god of chaos. The short intro ends as three beloved sons of popular kings are being asked to be sacrifices for the continued well-being of their people. Flash forward to present day New York city where Liliana is beginning her spring break; looking for some solitude in her one of her favorite places, Metropolitan Museum of Art. As she sits and gets ready to sketch in the Egyptian wing she hears a scraping sound and moans. Thus begins her adventure with Amon, who turns out to be one of the princes who were sacrificed thousands of years ago. They awaken once every 1000 years and battle the dark to save the world. It sounds a little silly but the characters are well developed and sympathetic. I thought the author could have left out some of the extraneous details, but I expected to be skeptical and I was swept up in the magic of journeying to Egypt to find the other two brothers so they can join him in his quest. The problem for Amon is that his "canopic jars" (the jars that hold a mummy's organs) are not with him, so he must borrow some life force from Lily. They struggle with romance that is forbidden on so many levels and come out as winners in the end. I will recommend this book to my students. Verdict: This is a new series from Houck who gave us the popular Tiger's Curse series. It does not disappoint.
Curricular Use: This would be good for students interested in Egyptian mythology and has a couple of excellent examples of compare and contrast as Amon learns about how people view mummies through movies and books in the present day.

Cat leaders and group members struggle with such emotions as grief, ambition, and revenge. Baba Yaga’s Assistant

Illustrator: Emily Carroll
Candlewick, 2015
ISBN: 9780763669614
Grades 4 - 5,Grades 6 - 8,Grades 9 - 12: Masha is mourning her grandmother, who told her folktales about Baba Yaga and took care of her after her mother died, the night her father introduces his new fiancé and her young, biting daughter. If her father found a new family, she can too, she decides, and answers an advertisement to become Baba Yaga’s assistant. Into the woods she goes, using the knowledge gleaned from her grandmother’s stories to outwit the legendary witch and pass the tests to become her assistant. Emily Carroll’s artwork is stunning, and it’s what makes the story so enchanting. The drawing style changes between the main plot line, Masha’s memories, and the folktales she recalls to distinguish the different layers of storytelling. Baba Yaga’s face is occasionally terrifying, but overall Carroll’s illustrations are less scary than in "Through the Woods." But as in her other work, it’s her use of color that makes her art so beautiful and distinctive. The ending, with Masha's decision to truly become Baba Yaga's assistant after briefly returning home, gives her story a real fairy tale twist. Verdict: A great middle grade graphic novel that teen readers will also enjoy.

Fairest
Author: Meyer, Marissa

Feiwel & Friends, 2015
ISBN: 9781250060556
Grades 9 - 12: Following in the footsteps of authors like Joseph Delaney, Marissa Meyer takes a detour in the telling of The Lunar Chronicles with Fairest to provide readers with the backstory of her arch villain Levana. In Fairest, readers learn about Levana's evil older sister, her tragic attempts to capture love, and how she became the bitter nemesis of Cinder. If anything, Meyer is becoming more adept at adding depth to her characters--which made this a more satisfying read. This story also introduces Winter, Levana's stepdaughter, who is featured in her own book which was released in November, 2015. Be aware: Even at age sixteen, Levana is behaving with all the feminine wiles of Scarlett O'Hara. Her sexuality is tastefully addressed. More important are Meyers' examination of the themes of beauty, perfection, and love. Levana's desire for intimacy and her use of sex to get it makes this a timely and thought-provoking story. Verdict: A must-have book to round out collections containing The Lunar Chronicles.
Curricular Use: This is an excellent book for introducing the skill of looking at a situation through multiple perspectives. It is appropriate for independent reading project.

Determined to transfer to a Princeton feeder school soon, Zoe isn’t looking to make new friends, but as soon as the school year begins she finds herself drawn into the world of Philip Digby. First partnered with Digby on an independent project for school,it's not long before she's involved with his obsessive investigation into the disappearance of a missing local girl, which he believes may be connected to his own sister's disappearance several years before. As time passes, laws are broken, and no work is done on their school project, Zoe is surprised to realize that Digby has become her friend. "Trouble is a Friend of Mine" is sharp and funny. Zoe's first-person narration is full of witty sarcasm and little self-awareness. In the end, the primary mystery is resolved but much is left open for what would be a very welcome sequel. Verdict: While the plot is intriguing, it was the development of the relationship between Zoe and Digby that kept me reading into the early hours of the morning.
