Out of Wonder: Poems Celebrating Poets
Author: Alexander, Kwame with Chris COlderley and Marjory Wentworth
Illustrator: Holmes, Ekua
Candlewick, 2017
ISBN: 9780763680947
$16.99
Grades 1 - 3, Grades 4 - 5, Grades 6 - 8, Grades 9 - 12: “Out of Wonder” is a beautifully illustrated picture-book size collection of poems. The three authors, Kwame Alexander, Chris Colderley and Marjory Wentworth, celebrate twenty poets with poems that are both inspired by and in the style of each poet. The poems are separated into three sections based on a particular facet of the poet being celebrated. The first section is style, the next is theme, and the last is personal connection. The book has short biographies of each poet being celebrated in the back.
This is a wonderful book to get readers excited about poetry. Kwame Alexander’s poems in particular really capture both the joy of poetry and the spirit of the poets he loves. The illustrations by Ekua Holmes are rich with color and perfectly suited to the poems on each page. Verdict: I highly recommend this book for all ages.

Pickwick's Picnic A Counting Adventure
Author: Brendler, Carol
Illustrator: Renee Kurilla
Clarion Books, 2017
ISBN: 9780544839588
$16.99
P - K, Grades 1 - 3: The Pickwick’s Picnic takes the reader on an educational counting adventure from the hot, crowded, noisy city to a quiet beach and marshmallow-roasting with an unexpected road block in the middle of it. The reader learns the names of vehicles in combination with descriptive adjectives such as “ritzy limos”, “revvin’ racers”, “hasty hatchbacks” and “hydraulic haulers”. Two cute white dogs, Pip and Peach Pickwick, problem-solve and keep calm in a major traffic jam. They set up an awning for shade and serve lemonade. Other dogs follow suit and the road transforms into a big picnic spot.
The author is skilled at using language. The text flows. Tongue breakers, such as “Pickwick picnic” and unusual word combinations, such as “box-girder bridge” add an extra twist to this counting book. Verb choices, such as chug, seethe and smolder expand the young readers’ vocabulary. The colorful illustrations invite the reader to count the number of each type of vehicle and the highly skilled counter can practice his/her skills by counting all of the dogs that are traveling and that are having a picnic.
Verdict: The rich text makes this a delightful book that introduces the reader to verbs, adjectives, names of vehicles and the numbers 1 to 10. The colorful illustrations bring the words to life.

P - K, Grades 1 - 3, Grades 4 - 5: The book Robins! How they grow up tells a detailed story about the life style of robins. Male robins leave the south to go north to scout out a perfect place to have a family. The journey is dangerous and takes a couple of weeks. When female robins arrive, courtship begins over eating worms. The story includes the dangers of being a robin. Squirrels eat their eggs. Robins’ predators include falcons, hawks, owls and cats.
The book includes a detailed account of how the baby robins change as they grow older, how they learn to fly and how they learn to find their own food and learn robin-talk. The story was inspired by true events when a robin built a nest on a hoe in the author’s shed.
The author includes a glossary, a page with more facts about robins and a list of books and websites with more information birds and robins.
I had the privilege of watching two Stellar Jays build a nest in a rhododendron outside of my home office window this spring. The nest is a piece of art. After about two weeks, the female disappeared from the nest. I never saw any baby birds.

La La La
Author: DiCamillo, Kate
Illustrator: Jaime Kim
Candlewick Press, 2017
ISBN: 9780763658335
$17.99
P - K, Grades 1 - 3: This book gives a powerful message, to sing and listen, to reach out and connect to overcome loneliness. This almost wordless book communicates many feelings. The illustrator Jaime Kim captures the girl’s many emotions as she walks around and sings. The word la, alone or repeated once or twice or several times or shouted as “laaaaaaaaa!” guides the reader throughout the book as the girl goes on her journey to get a response to her singing. The girl is drawn almost colorless, with blacks and grays and a touch of rosy cheeks. Through facial expressions, the illustrator captures the girl’s innocence and wonder as she sings and waits for a response to her singing and she captures her sadness when she does not get a response. Jaime Kim first adds color to the pages as she introduces orange leaves. The girl’s body language reflects a sense of excitement and adventure as she follows the leaves. The illustrator adds yellows and greens as the girl sings and shouts at a tree. As night falls the pages turn purple. The girl still has hope. Her is face is lit by the moon and she starts to sing to the moon. She even gets a ladder, but she can’t quite reach the moon. She still does not get a response and she grows sad again and with her head hanging low she goes back inside and falls asleep until suddenly she hears a “la!” She follows the sound and has a back and forth exchange with the moon, who is now shown with a face, a mouth, two eyes and a nose. The illustrations tell their own story. This book captured my attention mainly through the colors, and the girl’s facial expressions and body language. Who knew that an almost wordless book can tell an amazing story! Verdict: The illustrations tell their own story. This book captured my attention mainly through the colors, and the girl’s facial expressions and body language.

The Story Book Knight
Author: Docherty, Helen & Thomas
Illustrator: Helen & Thomas Docherty
Sourcebooks Jabberwacky, 2016
ISBN: 9781492638148
$16.99
P - K, Grades 1 - 3: The Story Book Knight Even dragons love a good story is a pleasant read. Helen and Thomas Docherty keep the readers engaged with their rhyming poem-like text in paragraph form and the adorable illustrations. The illustrations are done green, blue and gray tones. The book gives the message that reading is better than fighting. Book-loving mouse knight Leo is sent on a mission to tame a dragon. While he rides on his horse Old Ned, he tackles some challenging situations. He calms the griffin by reading him a story about a griffin and before they part, Leo gives the griffin the book that he had read to him several times. Leo even convinces the angry-looking and hungry troll to not eat him. Instead, he reads the troll a story about goats and a troll.
At last, he arrives in a deserted messy town. People are scared and hide inside their houses. Leo confronts the dragon and gives him an ultimatum that if he does not clean up the mess, the book about dragons will go into the trash. Leo shows the dragon, upon his request, how to clean up and together they tackle the mess, replant trees and the people lose their fear and gather in the streets again. Finally, dragon gets his story and Leo reads to him six times to please and lets him have the book.
On his journey, Leo spreads his love of reading and tames a griffin, a troll and a dragon in the process. Leo’s parents realize that their son does not need to fight and Leo is allowed to read.
Verdict: The moral of the story is that reading books is better than fighting. The rhyming poem-like text and the illustrations complement each other well.

Mr. Lewis continued his life of service by becoming an elected congressman where he has served since 1986. In the Past

Illustrator: Matthew Trueman
Candlewick Press, 2018
ISBN: 9780763660734
$17.99
Grades 1 - 3, Grades 4 - 5: This poetry book is set up in such an interesting manner that the kids will learn so much about dinosaurs and they will love the short poems along with the great photos. The time line at the bottom of the illustrations on every page puts this whole dinosaur evolution into better understanding for the young learner.
Each period of time has a focus of one dinosaur of that time put into a short poem. Triassic Period features Eoraptor, similar to Velociraptor as in Jurassic Park movie yet it show this inaccuracy. The poem is short and succinct. The Jurassic Period page has Stegosaurus with a poem about the small brain.
I really like this book for kids to listen to and discuss the kinds of critters lived at different periods. It will be shocking for kids to understand periods being millions of years. Included in the back is more details of the dinosaurs. Verdict: This book size is difficult to put on shelf, yet I understand the giant size emphasizes the dinosaur ages. It is not library bound.

The Curious World of Calpurnia Tate
Author: Kelly, Jacqueline
Illustrator: NA
Henry Holt & Co., 2015
ISBN: 9780805097443
$16.99
Grades 4 - 5, Grades 6 - 8: This storyline continues the experiences of Calpurnia Tate from her earlier title, The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate. Fascinated by the natural world of biology and other sciences, young Calpurnia, who is stuck in the middle of 6 brothers, struggles against an era where girls are educated only to be wives. Between helping and protecting a younger, tender hearted brother who keeps taking in hurt or young animals to exploring the outside world with her grandfather, the budding scientist eventually helps a local vet when she is not unhappily learning the more boring, domestic arts of sewing and knitting and cooking and cleaning. The author makes a believable and interesting character who deals with the inequities of life while growing up in a rapidly changing world. Many issues are resolved happily yet the author does not sugar coat the situations or the times or even all the solutions. Ms. Kelly expertly indicates emotions of her characters with a simple suggestion of a facial movement or tone of voice. Her writing is clear and consistent, her plot is easy to follow and her ending leaves one looking forward to more. Verdict: This enjoyable story tinged with bits of science is an excellent choice for any tween or young teenage reader. It also lends itself well to reading out loud to any age group.
Curricular Use: Though this could be used as a fictional intro to the natural sciences, there are many issues that arise in the story worthy of discussion: the taking of a young animal which may have a parent nearby; the handling of wild animals; what is really involved in being a vet; and many other subjects, The Curious World of Calpurnia Tate rates as being a lovely book for summer or anytime reading.

Sinking the Sultana
Author: Walker, Sally
Illustrator: NA
Candlewick Press, 2017
ISBN: 9780763677558
$$24.99
Grades 4 - 5, Grades 6 - 8, Grades 9 - 12: When the steamboat Sultana sank on the Mississippi River, more people died than when the Titanic sank. But it was at the end of the Civil War, at the same time that President Lincoln was assassinated and Booth was shot, and the country was somewhat “desensitized to death.” Union soldiers who had survived horrific conditions as prisoners of war were freed and heading home. One of the main means of transportation north were steamboats. Through questionable circumstances, the Sultana was loaded way past capacity, with hundreds of men crowding the decks. Walker does an excellent job telling the story of this disaster, starting with the history of steamboats on the great Ohio and Mississippi rivers, describing how steam engines work and the economics of cargos on those vessels. She gives the biographies of five men who enlisted as Union soldiers. Through them and their captures, we learn about the parole process that took place at the beginning of the conflict, and the subsequent horrific conditions in some of the southern POW camps. Hundreds barely survived, only to suffer terrible deaths when the boilers blew up and the boat burned. This is a timely story that needs to be told, instead of forgotten. Walker is a model of historic research, and this book has a glossary, index, epilogue, author’s note, chapter notes and bibliography. The story builds to disaster and is full of information to read in total or single chapters to use for read alouds. I can’t wait to share this is my teachers of American history! Verdict: Engaging non-fiction, a must have for your Civil War enthusiasts.
Curricular Use: Excellent example of historic research and in depth treatment of a little known of historic disaster. Wonderful background stories and journal entries that could provide examples for Language Arts classes, besides obvious history connections for Civil War and its context.

Alfred A. Knopf, 2005/2016
ISBN: 9781101934180
$19.99
Grades 6 - 8, Grades 9 - 12: This special edition of “The Book Thief” was released for its 10-year anniversary. I really love the new book jacket, which is made to look like the stories within the story that Max Vandenberg makes by writing on painted-over pages of Mein Kampf. The story, narrated by Death, of ten-year-old Liesel Meminger and her life on Himmel Street in 1939 Nazi Germany after she is sent to foster with the Hubermanns (her parents are persecuted for being Communists) is still as moving as ever. This edition includes additional back matter. In an introduction, author Markus Zusak credits his parents for teaching him how to tell stories and also for their own stories of growing up in Nazi Germany. Most of the bonus materials deal with Zusak’s writing process and includes an original handwritten outline and an excerpt of some of the 150 pages he wrote with Liesel as the narrator. There is also a short author interview. This is very interesting material for big fans of the book or people interested in the writing process. If you are in need of a new hardcover volume of “The Book Thief,” I would recommend getting this one. Verdict: There isn’t enough value added to make this particular edition a must buy, but every library serving middle school and above should have at least one copy of “The Book Thief.”

Grades 4 - 5, Grades 6 - 8: Miss Tate P. Ellerbee has started school and the first day her teacher assigned a creative writing project. The assignment is to write letters to someone, a pen pal, telling them about her experiences and activities of her life. Tate picked her favorite country singer Hank Williams whom she listened to on the radio and regardless of the resistance from her teacher. Plus, Tate was going to sing pretty like her mama and be in a singing talent contest. Tate and her little brother, Frog lived with her Aunt Patty Cake and Uncle Jolly. Through the voice of Tate in her letters to hank Williams unfolds her story. First she tells about her mama being away staring in a film and her father, a photographer traveling around taking pictures of animals in Africa. All this turns out to be untrue as she reveals in later letters. Her mother is in jail for driving a get away car in a bank robbery and her dad left long ago. Tate writes Hank Williams all about her life and dreams yet only receives autographed pictures of him in the mail. Tate uses these letters as a diary and her real self is revealed as she is ready to accept her life.
This book is really enjoyable to read because the reader feels like they know the real narrator and yet she is not truthful at first and then as she reveals more the reader gets more attached. It is happy and sad and warm and friendly. Verdict: Ms Holt did a lot of research about the 1948 setting and inserted many accurate facts to add realism to the story.

He did not do well in school because he was always engaged in finding answers to his own questions. He wanted to understand why planets orbited around the sun and why a rainbow appeared when light moved through a prism and why an apple fell to the Earth from the tree (which led to his theory of gravitation). The Shin champion has to deal with different customs, hostile classmates and keeping an eye on her weaker brother all while trying to maintain her champion status. Eventually the orphans realize they are in real danger when someone keeps sabotaging the school while the blame falls on Peasprout and Cricket. Though the premise of skating on surfaces of pearl (instead of ice) while engaging in a martial arts style of fighting is contrived, the story is very well written with interesting characters capable of change along with several unexpected outcomes. I also enjoyed Mr. Lien's verbal illustrations of the action sequences. There is a map of the Pearl Academy on both end pieces. P - K: Today I’m a Construction Worker is part of a series of 4 community helper books by Marisa Polansky. This book follows Jack, the construction worker throughout the week. Children learn what it takes to build a house from start to finish. The book contains vocabulary pages with pictures showing children the different tools needed in the construction process and children learn the names of parts of a building and what equipment is called. It is a bit unrealistic that a house can be built in a week. This board book with colorful pictures will hold up well in the hands of many young children.
Verdict: I love this series as it introduces young children to new vocabulary and teaches them about what a professional does and what tools he/she uses.

P - K: Today I’m a Race Car Driver is part of a series of 4 community helper books by Marisa Polansky. This book follows Leo, the race car driver for the week. Children learn new vocabulary, such as pit crew, tire pressure gauge and trophy.
Once again, Maxine Lee provides the wonderful illustrations that highlight the tools and equipment that a race car driver uses. The vocabulary pages assist the young reader in making connections between a picture and the written word.
The text is simple yet it includes new vocabulary that provides children with the opportunity to talk about practice laps and gets them talking about racetracks and race cars and wanting to be race car drivers.
The book has the shape of a person. The book gives the message of confidence. The book could lend itself to talk about winning and losing and what it takes to be a winner and a good loser.
Verdict: Once again the author and illustrator create an educational resource for young children. I like the vocabulary pages that strengthen the connection between print and pictures.

Owls! Strange and Wonderful
Author: Pringle, Laurence
Illustrator: Meryl Henderson
Boyds Mills Press, 2016
ISBN: 9781620916513
$16.95
Grades 1 - 3, Grades 4 - 5: Besides scientific facts, the book Owls also explains how the first owl was created and how it got its flattened beak. The owl has negative and positive associations. The Mayan God of death wore an owl mask. Some people associate owls with wisdom and good luck and that they help to improve eye sight to allow for hunting and battle success. In the Harry Potter series owls serve as messengers.
This picture book is very wordy and therefore for older children and good readers. The text itself is very informative and contains fascinating information.
The book covers owls’ habitat. Most of them live in trees while the burrowing owl lives underground. Some owls live on the ground. Owls live on every continent except Antarctica. Owl heads of different species look different. About 240 species exist. Owls are able to express their moods through their feathered tufts. The smallest owl, the elf owl, is smaller than a robin. The biggest owls have a wing span of more than five feet and can weigh up to nine pounds. Owls also have different sounds. They can scream, hiss, wail, yowl and of course howl.
Owls differ also in their diet, which can include insects, scorpions, fish, birds, mammals,
The owl skeleton is small. The body is covered in feathers and gives the owl its size. Owl bones are full of air pockets, which makes the bones light weight but also strong.
Owl eyes are like human eyes in the way the eyes face straight ahead and that the owl eyelids blink from the top down. Owls can turn their heads very far, due to fourteen neck bones (double the number of neck bones that a person has), so that they can see in all directions. They have very good hearing, which helps them locate their prey. Owl feet have four toes total. Two toes face to the front, one toe faces to the back and the fourth toe can either go to the front or the back. Owl wings don’t make a sound when they fly.
Loss of habitat impacts the number of owls. Mice poison is also dangerous to owls who eat the poisoned mice.
Photo-like water color and pencil illustrations are very detailed and show the owls’ markings, eyes, tufts, feet and talons and the skeleton.
The book includes mythical information and factual information about owls’ habitat, diet, vision, owls’ features, such as eyes, ears, their feet, their digestion, mating behavior and some information about owlets (baby owls).
Verdict: The book includes mythical information and factual information about owls’ habitat, diet, vision, owls’ features, such as eyes, ears, their feet, their digestion, mating behavior and some information about owlets (baby owls). The book is loaded with information in print and pictures and leaves the reader with an appreciation for owls.

The Word Collector

Orchard Books, 2018
ISBN: 9780545865029
$17.99
Grades 1 - 3, Grades 4 - 5: Jerome collected words just like others collect bugs or rocks. He wrote words on papers and in books. He wrote down words he heard or saw or read or popped out to him. He began to sort and organize his words. Then one day he tripped and dropped all his words and they were scattered. His words landed together and he began to put more together. He wrote poems and delighted his friends. He learned he needed to share his words with the world, so he dragged the pile up a hill and smiled as he emptied them into the wind. The children below began to collect the words and Jerome was happy.
What a wonderful concept and a great introduction into writing. Verdict: Peter H. Reynolds appeal to me as many others. The message in his books make me happy,

The rock the kids go to see at the science center is different than before. Is the current stone the real one? With tests to determine if the rock is a real meteorite, the scientist and kids find out. This is a scientific mystery presented with some humor. I would like to see the others in the series. Love the nod to Neil deGrasse Tyson in the bison character. Verdict: Clear and fun and accurate, the mystery and the science blend well and will appeal to any kid. A good book for the reluctant readers.

P - K: Birgitta Sif’s book Where my Feet Go takes the reader on a journey with Little Panda as he explores the many places his feet can take him. First, Little Panda’s feet go into socks and bright yellow boots and then he does a hand-stand before his feet walk on/through different terrain. A field of greens becomes the jungle, a pile of dirt becomes a tall mountain and the bath tub becomes a place for underwater exploring. The illustrations support the text to bring the adventurous spirit of Little Panda alive. The author/illustrator uses many adjectives to describe what Little Panda experiences. The text flows well as Birgitta Sif uses a combination of descriptive sentences and questions, which spark the readers’ imagination. He did his bit during the game and the crowd went wild! Max was hired to perform at the big leagues games with the Cleveland Indians. He kissed players, lost his pants and ran around the field in silliness. He became well known, but times were changing. Mascots came into the game and the comic routines changed. Puddle
Author: Yum, Hyewon
Illustrator: Hyewon Yum
Farrar Straus Giroux, 2016
ISBN: 9780374316952
$16.99
P - K, Grades 1 - 3: Instead of getting upset when her son does not want to go outside when it is raining, the mother in the story Puddle quietly starts drawing. The boy becomes interested in what she is drawing and makes requests on what she should add to the picture and he draws the rain when his Mom asks him to. Mother and son verbally act out the story as it comes alive in pictures. On their imaginary walk, they discover a puddle and the boy in the picture splashes water all over as he jumps into the puddle. Billy, the dog, enjoys the puddle as well. As the story plays out on paper and in their imagination, the boy becomes excited and wants to go outside and play. Dressed up in appropriate rain gear, Mom, the boy and Billy, the dog, with his rain cape, discover a real puddle with smiles on their faces.
The text is printed in black, representing what the boy says and in red, representing what the mother says.
I love how the story unfolds. The illustrations beautifully complement the text. It looks like actual water enhanced the effect of splashing water from the puddle.
This is one of my favorite books. I have read it to many children. It sparked a lot of discussions in the fall during rainy season. Children talked about what they wear outside. They showed me their boots and talked about what kind of umbrellas they have.
Verdict: This is an appropriate book for the rainy Northwest. The boy character in the book becomes engaged and interested in his Mom's drawings, which are skillfully illustrated by the author herself, and a boring day turns into an adventure as the boy, his Mom and the dog explore a puddle and enjoy a rainy day after all.

P - K, Grades 1 - 3: A boy gets a big-kid bed with a Tyrannosaurus Rex for a head board for his birthday. He can’t wait to go to bed that night. But once he is in bed, he gets scared. He sees a dinosaur on the wall and he runs from his room. But his dog, Grandma and his parents are not available to comfort him, because they are sleeping. The boy lies down on his parents’ bed, but can’t get comfortable. Eventually, he goes back to his own room. The shadow on the wall and the moon are gone and he is no longer scared and falls asleep.
Mom and Dad are both shown to take care of him. Dad gives him a bath. Mom reads to him.
This book can help children talk about their fears of sleeping alone and/or sleeping in a new bed and can lead to discussions on how they can cope with their fears. The book supports the notion that children should sleep in their own bed.
The colorful illustrations complement the simple text in rhyme form. The text has a nice flow to it when read aloud.

My Pet Wants a Pet
Author: Broach, Elise
Illustrator: Eric Barclay
Henry Holt and Company, 2018
ISBN: 9781250109279
$16.99
P - K, Grades 1 - 3: The book My Pet Wants a Pet shows the importance of taking care of something.
A boy, the main character in the story, finally convinces his Mom to get her a pet. So, they buy a puppy from the pet store and a bunch of toys and accessories. The boy and dog bond very well. One day, the puppy decided that he wants a pet, too. The boy pleaded with his mother until she gave in. The puppy picked a kitten for his pet and they got along well and then the kitten wanted a pet and on the story goes as the pets want their own pet to take care of. The mother never liked the idea of a pet, but she always gave in. Even the flea picked a pet, which was the puppy that already lived in the house with the boy. All the pets and the boy were happy, but the Mom was very unhappy and her son and the pets got worried about it. The boy comes up with an idea. He gives himself as a present to his Mom so that she would have something to take care of.
The book has the message that when you take care of something, the something will take care of you. The boy figured out how to make his Mom happy. I find the portrayal of the Mom as first being very negative in regards to pets and then giving in for her son to have a pet and for the pets allowed to have pets as confusing. The story of pets wanting pets is unique and funny and gives children and adults a lot to take about. This book could lead to enriching discussions about responsibility and respect.
The book is wordy and too long for young children as a read-along in one sitting. It includes repetition, which could encourage children to help read the story and it challenges readers at the same time with long sentences. For older readers, the book could be used to examine sentence structure and to name parts of the sentence. Eric Barclay captures the emotions in the characters’ faces well with his illustrations.
Verdict: I recommend this book for its topic and the language itself and for the message that taking care of something helps to ensure that something or someone will take care of you. The book captures the importance of relationships between human and animals, between animals themselves and between parent and child.

Frida and Bear Play the Shape Game!
Author: Browne, Anthony
Illustrator: Hanne Bartholin
Candlewick press, 2015
ISBN: 9780763678371
$15.99
P - K, Grades 1 - 3: The book Frida and the Bear Play The Shape Game! supports children’s imagination. One day, bear runs out of ideas on what to draw. Frida, the elephant, draws a shape onto a piece of paper and asks Bear to turn it into something. By adding an eye, eye brows, an ear, nose and mouth and a body, bear turns the shape into a puppy. Frida and Bear take turns and challenge each other to turn a shape into something. In addition to using drawn shapes on paper or an envelope, the brain is engaged even more by turning a piece of wrapping paper or a twig into something. I love the out-of-the box ideas by using things from nature or recyclable materials and to let children run wild with their imagination in creating something. The open-ended question “I wonder what that could be?” sparks children’s creativity.
The simple text and the illustrations help young children to decipher the words to help them become confident readers.
The Danish illustrator Hanne Bartholin uses different color backgrounds to let the creations on the pages in the book stand out. Simple marker lines start the beginning of new creations using different drawing tools such as colored pencils, and crayons.
Verdict: The book sparks the imagination of children and encourages creativity. The simple text and the illustrations encourage children to read.

Easy to read text invites the reader to turn the page. Fun in the end are some activities for kids to do focused around Spring. Verdict: The content is recommended. The photographs great. Who We Are! All About Being the Same and Being Different
Author: Harris, Robie H.
Illustrator: Nadine Bernard Westcott
Candlewick Press, 2016
ISBN: 9780763669034
$15.99
P - K: This book celebrates diversity.
The book explores the differences and similarities between people as a family of five visits Funland. The siblings Nellie and Gus talk about themselves. Their Mom has a darker skin color while their Dad is white. Some women wear head scarves. Dads are shown carrying babies and children.
Parts inside of the bodies are listed as being the same and on the outside people have a nose, a mouth, and fingernails.
Adjectives describe differences of people’s hair. Skin colors are described as “coffee, cream, pink, black, honey, chocolate, gold” to name a few. Olive, and cinnamon are other colors. Eyes are looked at as well.
The book describes what melanin does. It includes a message to wear sunscreen. A child in a wheel chair and a child with crutches is shown. Bias is brought up along with feelings.
The book is wordy and would not work well as a read-aloud unless a few pages at a time would be read. Children can make their own observations as they look at the illustrations and the book can lead to enriching discussions about how people are the same and different.
Verdict: The book touches on different aspects of diversity from skin color, hair, eyes and it shows people with different abilities. It is wordy for preschoolers, but would lend itself to introduce discussions about similarities and differences.

Grades 4 - 6: Ada Lovelace is part of ABDO Publishing's STEM Superstar Woman Series. This brief biography of a math, logic and science whiz shows how one woman's study and analysis contributes to the modern computer through her mathematical formulas, translations and theories. Ms. Doudna touches on all aspects of this scientist's life. She illustrates how emotional support and the advantages of upper social connections help Ada to excel along with men in the field. I enjoyed this glimpse into the life of a woman who was supported in and pursued her left brain interests. Verdict: The biography is an excellent example of the various ways a person's work can contribute to major scientific breakthroughs. It is a good addition to the science collection.
Curricular Use: Science classes can use the book for extra reading. It is especially pertinent to social studies and how social and cultural (and financial) support can assist anyone in making contributions to the world at large. ISBN: 9780525515975
$18.99
Grades 5 - 8: Dr. Bialik's Book is comprehensive and covers many aspects of growing up that are absent in similar books. However, other than the questing few, most boys would only read it if it was presented in a health class or by a respected older boy or mentor. The science of the body, the mind and sexuality are covered along with the challenges of love, lust, stress, self image, addictions and integrity. Too bad most boys do not have a trusted parent or teacher to consult with regarding their questions on the text or with getting help with their problems as advised by the author. Boying Up is a decent jump start to help the tween begin to make sense of their bodies and feelings and relationships. Verdict: Boying Up is a good set of answers for the gutsy kid who really wants to understand more about themselves.
Curricular Use: In an ideal world of time and resources, Dr Bialik's book should be required reading for boys in Health or Physical Education classes. A Few Red Drops: the Chicago Race Riot of 1919
Author: Hartfield, Claire
Illustrator: NA
Clarion Books, 2018
ISBN: 9780544785137
$18.99
Grades 6 - 8, Grades 9 - 12: “A Few Red Drops” sets the scene of the morning the riot began, describing how teenage Eugene Williams was killed by a white boy who hit him in the head with a thrown rock while Eugene was swimming and how the police response, rapid-spreading rumors, and a volatile environment ignited a riot. It then goes back to discuss how racial tensions developed in Chicago. It begins detailing the strong but small black community that existed both before and after the Civil War, then describes the influx of immigrants from Ireland, who dealt with the extreme prejudice they faced in America by becoming insular and defensive. The book then covers the growth of the meat-packing industry and how closely associated that work and its unions became with immigrants from Ireland and eastern Europe. When World War I began, the promise of a better life and a good job drew many black migrants from the South to Chicago to work in the meat packing industry, which needed more workers because men were leaving to fight in the war at the same time that demand for meat was increasing. When the war ended, however, Chicago was left overcrowded, with men competing for jobs and housing along racial lines. The influence of the union, politicians, and ethnic gangs also contributed to the building tension. The book then returns to describe the week-long riot in some detail.
This nonfiction book is very engaging. I liked how focused the book was, which allows the reader to really understand the context of the riot. There are certainly things to learn here that continue to influence America today. The book is also really well designed. The provocative blood drops on the cover are continued in chapter headings throughout and the book includes fantastic photographs and images of advertisements, newspaper clippings, and political cartoons from the period. Source notes, bibliography, picture credits, and an index are included. Verdict: An engaging and well-researched book for readers interested in American history and race relations.

Contacted by the mysterious Madden, she eventually trains to take on a spy assignment in Russia regarding an American who threatens to reveal the agents of the very secret organization which Paige has been conscripted into. If she shows her worth, Madden may be able to get the resources to rescue her parents. The story is written first person flippant reflecting the popular heroines depicted in current light mysteries. It is a light story with characters appropriate to spy novels. The vehicle for the story (her missing parents) is to be resolved in another book. Other than that, the story is complete. Verdict: I don't know how long the series is going to be, but the story was fun and quick moving. I found it a worthwhile ride in and of itself.

The Fates Divide
Author: Roth, Veronica
Illustrator: NA
Katherin Tegen Books, 2018
ISBN: 9780062426956
$21.99
Grades 9 - 12: This is the sequel to Carve the Mark a story of two people who are thrown together by fate and seemingly prevented from a relationship by the same fate. In a world where people develop a ‘current gift’ that is some special ability, Cyra has the ability to cause great just pain by touching them, and is in constant pain herself, and Akos’s gift is the ability to interrupt the functioning of anyone’s current gift. So he can provide Cyra respite. Since his father’s murder by Cyra’s marauders from a nation of scavengers, Akos is captive to their ruthless ruling family. He went there to protect his older brother, who they captured so they could have their own oracle. It is a classic struggle for power, political upheaval as the Assembly seeks to take power from the Oracle, people who bestow, see and read “fates” and love. Cyra and Akos have escaped with her brother, whose gift allowed him to infiltrate Akos’s oracle brother’s mind. Enroute to the dark planet of Ogra, planet of exiles, Cyra’s captive brother is murdered by Chancellor Benesit, avenging her twin sister who was murdered at his hands. Names at the beginning of each chapter help to keep this twisting, fast-paced narrative straight. And the classic strong against weak, rich over the poor and destiny vs free-will make this finish to the duology hard to put down. There is violence (people are forced to carve out their own eyes by a body controlling current gift, for instance) but it is seen in brutal fighting and not drawn out is unbearable detail. Also some references to kissing and falling together where they spend the night, but no graphic details. Verdict: High demand sequel. You'll want to get it for your readers who devoured Carve the Mark.

The Chosen Prince
Author: Stanley, Diane
Illustrator: NA
Harper, 2015
ISBN: 9780062248978
$16.99
Grades 6 - 8, Grades 9 - 12: In the form of a Greek myth, The Chosen Prince is loosely based on Shakespeare's last play, The Tempest. In it, Alexos, heir to the throne of Arcos, is chosen by Athene to be the one to release the people of the split kingdom from Zeus's generations old curse. Alexos deals with heavy expectations of his father as he grows and then, still a boy, loses all that matters to him. Soon after, he receives the burden of being king when his father is killed. Several years later, Athene brings about the events that may finally end the eternal war, drought, poverty and suffering of the kingdoms. Though awkward in the handling of certain sections and transitions of the story, especially at the end, Diane Stanley presents a story of integrity, loyalty, and ultimately, true forgiveness. Verdict: In spite of the writing flaws, The Chosen Prince is a beautiful and heartmoving story.
Curricular Use: Outside of an excellent story to read, an English or Drama instructor could have this be a companion volume to The Tempest and have the reader compare the two stories and or create their own story out of this play or some other Shakespeare play.

Becoming Madeleine

$19.99
Grades 6 - 8, Grades 9 - 12: This is a look at the people and events who/which formed and influenced one of the most famous authors of books for young people. Madeleine L'Engle was a sensitive child who developed great insights about those around her. She was often lonely and isolated but determined to write as well as better herself. Gaining experience through the theater, Miss L'Engle then experienced all the ups and downs that came with writing and trying to get her books published. A very personal account of a shy yet vivacious girl who grew up to be a successful writer, it is peppered with selections from Madeleine's journals and other writings as well as many photos from throughout her life. Honest and (from what I can tell) thorough, the reader will definitely gain understanding into the mind of such an influential writer. Verdict: Becoming Madeleine is an honest and lovely depiction of one of the best known writers of children's fiction.

How To Share With A Bear

Illustrator: Stephanie Graegin
Farrar Straus Giroux, 2015
ISBN: 9780374300197
$17.99
P - K, Grades 1 - 3: Thomas builds himself a cave in the living room. When he wants to use it. It is occupied by a bear. Thomas uses different methods to get the bear out of the cave on several occasions. First, he places blueberries down the steps so that the bear would follow the trail, which he does. Second, the bear uses the back scratcher Thomas staged. Also, the boy pretends to be a bee and leads the bear to some honey. Finally, Thomas can read a book in his cave. But when the bear cries when there is no room for two in the cave, Thomas feels bad and invites him in. When the cave crashes, the two of them build a bigger cave and enjoy reading a book together.
The bear represents Thomas’ younger brother and I am sure many siblings can relate to this story trying to keep siblings out of their play. The book includes cave-building instructions at the end.
The book could be used to explore feelings around sharing with others, especially with siblings and to explore problem-solving. Relationship-building is at the heart of this story.
