P - K, Grades 1 - 3, Grades 4 - 5: The story of Blip, a robot, who loves being plugged into her computer because she can learn new things, play fun games, dance to music, and visit faraway places all day long. But, one day there is a black out and she trips over her cord causing her to tumble down the stairs, out the door, down a steep hill, roll through a forest, and drift down a river. Being outside allowed Blip to meet new friends, learn new things, play fun games, dance to music, and visit faraway places all day long but in the real world. At the end of the day Blip returns home, says goodbye to her new friends, and plugs in again. However, though Blip liked her computer, she learned was happier outside. Verdict: I love this book for not only its lesson about unplugging yourself from tech to explore the world, but how the author/illustrator uses comparing and contrasting with color, and with the illustrations showing computer activities vs. outside activities.

P - K, Grades 1 - 3, Grades 4 - 5, Grades 6 - 8: A beautiful tale of a little girl named Lola who goes to a school where there are many students who have immigrated from different countries. Her class is asked to create a picture about their country of origin, but Lola does not remember her island because she left it when she was just a baby. The teacher gives her an idea to ask the people in her neighborhood to help describe the island to her. Lola sets out on a great adventure listening to wondrous stories of the beauty and culture of the island she came from, until she tries to talk with her super in her building, Mr. Mir. He would rather everyone who left forget the island. After speaking with her abuela and mother learning about the beauty but also the terrible hurricanes, abuela convinces Lola to try to talk to Mr. Mir about the island. He opens up that though there was greatness to the island, there was also a monster who brought fear and terror to the people. The monster is why so many left the island. It wasn't until the island people stood up to the monster that all was well again. Lola takes all the information she has gathered and has so much to share that she creates a book rather than a picture, and realizes that though she may not know the island she came from, the island is in her always. Verdict: I loved this book not only for its theme about what it is like for an immigrant child who lives in a new country and is missing the connection to their roots, but also for the beautiful illustrations, the wonderful writing, and the message that your culture, no matter where you come from or how much you know, is always a part of you.

Grades 9 - 12, Adult: Wow! What a powerfully-written book. Read this book! Sophomore Xiomara Batista lives in a Harlem apartment with her twin brother Xavier (aka Twin) and their Dominican parents. Mami is a very conservative, controlling, devout Catholic, who missed her calling to become a nun, by marrying late in life. This is something she seems to take out on her daughter. Whenever Xio is in trouble, Mami makes her kneel on grains of rice and pray at her home altar to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Papi is a philanderer. The antithesis of his wife, and just basically a ghost character in the book. When Xio falls for Aman, her biology lab partner, she must sneak around just to spend an hour with him. Aman shares music with Xio and she shares her poems with him. Aman calls Xio his Poet X. Xio's English teacher, Ms. Galiano, tries to persuade Xio to join the poetry club, but Xio keeps resisting. The book is written in verse, so we really see and feel Xio's feelings and emotions. She questions why she should be confirmed, which is something I appreciated. I'm glad she had the courage to question things that didn't make sense to her. I flinched when Mami slapped Xio across the face after catching her kissing Aman on the subway train. The power of Xio's words is palpable. Mami is so hateful towards her daughter. She threatens to send Xio back to the Dominican Republic sooner rather than later, in order to straighten her out. When Mami burns Xio's notebook full of her poetry and writing, this is the impetus Xio needs to start using her words. She joins the poetry club and she even agrees to participate in a poetry slam. Xiomara learns just how powerful her words are. After the notebook burning, the family seeks counseling with Father Sean. There will be many backward steps, but they are trying to move forward. There are many other family issues going on in the book, equally important, and equally powerful. I really enjoyed this book, especially the style in which it was written. Well-crafted, with relatable conflicts and issues. Verdict: I will recommend this book to my students. One of the best books I've read so far this year.

Grades 6 - 8: The only thing fourteen-year-old David Miller is really good at is eating. He can eat an entire sixteen-inch pepperoni pizza in four minutes and thirty-two seconds. When he accidentally places a successful $2,000 bid on the half-eaten hot dog that symbolizes the loss his favorite competitive eater Jooky Garafolo suffered at the last Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest, David suddenly needs money fast, before his mom gets the credit card bill. Luckily, his local pizza parlor will be hosting a pizza eating contest at the Iowa State Fair. The grand prize is $5,000. David convinces his friends Heyman and Cyn to invest and uses their money to start training, eating raw cabbage to stretch his stomach and practicing technique with pizzas. At the same time, David spends most of his summer babysitting his younger brother Mal, who has autism. David’s relationship with Mal is the heart of “Slider,” though the competitive eating aspects are interesting and often hilarious. Through their relationship, as well as those between the rest of the family members, David’s college-age sister Bridgette and his parents, the book explores family dynamics and expectations. In a poignant scene, David asks his parents why they can accept Mal completely but can’t accept his mistake or his talent. He also learns, slowly, that he’s good at more than just eating. Verdict: Funny and sweet, “Slider” is a great bridge book between middle grade and YA.

P - K, Grades 1 - 3, Grades 4 - 5, Grades 6 - 8: This beautifully illustrated picture book tells the story of a boy and his father who discover a large whale tangled up in their fishing net. The father is angry at the loss of the net and leaves it on the whale, believing the whale is going to die anyway. The boy disobeys his father and returns to the whale, cutting away all of the netting and is rewarded when the whale jumps and splashes away. Verdict: A great environmental story of doing the right thing, even though it's difficult. Readers will be cheering for the boy and the whale.

Grades 9 - 12, College: Two women disguised as men are on the run from the law and head to gold rush country to forge a new life. With the help of three unsuspecting cowboys they reach their destination in spite of many life threatening trials. Written from the point of view of the Chinese protagonist, the beginning sets the intense tone which continues throughout the story. Verdict: This tale of murder, mayhem and romance along with excellent writing qualifies my excellent rating.
Curricular Use: Under the Painted Sky indicates how Chinese and Blacks were treated in the middle 1800s but does not go into any depth of the sociology of the times. I recommend this for a summer reading list.

The Confidence Code For Girls

Harper, 2018
ISBN: 9780062796981
$14.99
Grades 4 - 5, Grades 6 - 8, Grades 9 - 12: "Thoughts + Confidence = Action." And so begins a well-written and informative book geared towards helping girls to gain the confidence they need and deserve to have in order to empower themselves in all areas of their lives. The book is divided into chapters, each dealing with specific ways to gain confidence in friendships, when confronted with bullying, online, at school (in class or extracurricular activities). There is also a chapter on kicking the perfection habit and creating your own confidence code. The book is filled with illustrations, side bars of information, quizzes, and true stories. The Confidence Code, while written more for a middle school audience, provides a wealth of valuable information for girls of all ages. Things I did not like: the small sidebar text size, and the small text in the graphic novel strips. While I like the real-life examples provided, I feel the content is rather repetitive. I like the inclusion of Resources at the end of the book, as well as a list of Organizations that provide additional information "for girls and their parents who are passionate about pursuing a healthy self-image, confidence, and leadership." Overall, this is a book that girls from fourth grade and on up should read. We all need tools in order to empower ourselves, and this book delivers. Verdict: I wish I had The Confidence Code for Girls when I was growing up. The Confidence Code is an excellent resource for helping girls of all ages to empower themselves.

Grades 9 - 12: A well written romance, First There Was Forever deals with classic high school angst issues. Lima's best friend since childhood, Hailey, has obsessed over Nate since 5th grade: Nate has never returned the interest. Now in 10th grade Hailey begins to hang out with another girl and leave her bestie behind. Unusual twins seem fascinated by Lima and befriend her. While over at the twin's place, Nate begins to show up and they develop a friendship and more which creates all kinds of complications for Lima who still cares for her (ex?) best friend. The story covers the challenging issues of friendship, lying vs honesty and sexuality. I appreciate how the author brings up the muddiness of these issues. There are no clear cut answers, yet the difference between what is right and wrong becomes clearer at the end. Verdict: Aimed towards teen girls, this story of friendship and romance is interesting and arresting.
Curricular Use: First There Was Forever covers aspects of honesty and what constitutes a good friend from both sides of the relationship.

$16.99
P - K, Grades 1 - 3, Grades 4 - 5, Grades 6 - 8: The true story of Jessica Kensky, survivor of the Boston Marathon Bombing, and Rescue, the service dog who came to live with and help her. The story is told from the points of view of both Rescue and Jessica as they go on their journey of a new life. Rescue was supposed to start out as seeing eye dog but the trainers decided to make him a support dog instead. Jessica was used to walking and running on two legs but suffered a major injury that cost her a leg. Jessica had to relearn how to walk and function in life. Rescue had to learn how to carry, fetch, open doors, and other tasks to become a support dog. One day while Jessica was in the hospital she saw a support dog demonstration and signed up to receive one. Rescue became that dog and her best friend, especially since Jessica had to lose her other leg as well. Jessica and Rescue developed a strong bond that helped both of them become better. Verdict: This is a great book to read to students to teach that they can overcome obstacles. I also like how this book goes back and forth between the dogs perspective and Jessica's making it a fun read for children.

Julius Zebra Rumble with the Romans
Author: Northfield, Gary
Illustrator: NA
Candlewick Press, 2015
ISBN: 9780763678531
$15.99
Grades 1 - 3, Grades 4 - 5, Grades 6 - 8: In the format similar to the styling of the original How To Train Your Dragon book series (ie. narrative with black and white hand drawn illustrations, witty and kid friendly potty humor, side dialogue, etc.) Julius Zebra is the story about a wimpy zebra who doesn't go along with the herd. One day while trying to be independent he meets a brainy fact toting warthog named Cornelius, and a grumpy lion name Milius. As Milius chases Julius and Cornelius away from the watering hole they all fall into a pit. Come to find out it was at trap the Romans set to catch animal fodder for gladiator games back in Rome. The animals are transferred to Rome where they meet Felix the antelope, Rufus the giraffe, Lucia the vegetarian crocodile, and Pliny a very tough little mouse who has watched many animals go off to the gods. The animals are immediately sent into "battle". Julius haphazardly begins to defend himself and ends up defeating the top gladiator. Emperor Hadrian praises Julius and offers him and his animal friends freedom if they train to fight at gladiator school on his upcoming birthday. The zany dialogue, illustrations, and adventures ensue leading up to the "big battle" creating a fun, enjoyable, and historical read. Verdict: I didn't think I would enjoy this book but I actually found it witty, and easy to read. I appreciate how the author uses actual historical vocabulary, numbers the pages in Roman Numerals, and then not only tells a well written story, but gives a glossary of terms and explains how Roman Numerals work in the appendix.
Curricular Use: Entertaining read, historical vocabulary, great for teaching dialogue and expression.

$17.99
P - K, Grades 1 - 3, Grades 4 - 5, Grades 6 - 8: A wonderful book that is just illustrations but captures the emotions of the two characters. This is the story of two boys who are drawing lines opposite each other and end up bumping into each other. The boys realize they can connect their lines together to become a three dimensional string to play with. However, one boy doesn't pay attention and ends up wrapping it around the other, knocking him down, and laughing. The second boy becomes angry and pulls back knocking the first down. As they argue a rift in the string begins to form a deep fissure between the two boys leaving them upset and sullen. The second boy realizes that the fissure is a drawing that can be erased and redrawn into something new. The boys work together to fix the fissure and their argument ending with the pair walking off together as friends. Verdict: I love the way the author/illustrator uses the boys clothes and hair as contrasting black and white along with the changes in background color to depict the mood as the story progresses. Though there are no words a lot can develop in discussions with students about what the story is trying to convey.

A Dog in the Cave: the wolves who made us human
Author: Frydenborg, Kay
Illustrator: NA
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2017
ISBN: 9780544286566
$18.99
Grades 4 - 5, Grades 6 - 8, Grades 9 - 12: Kay Frydenborg begins her book by painting a picture of a boy and his dog exploring a cave by torchlight some 26,000 years ago. This cave is Chauvet Cave, where footprints and smoke residue were discovered in 1994 that gave evidence that dogs and humans had cohabitated more than 17,000 years before scientists had previously thought. Frydenborg uses this story as a jumping off point to explore the relationship between humans and dogs and their coevolution using archaeology, genetics, neuroscience, and other fields of study. The result is fascinating.
A Dog in the Cave is easy to read and could reach a range of readers from upper elementary to high school. It does a nice job of explaining much of the background science in the book, such as evolution, magnetic resonance imaging, and the scientific method, but seems to assume some reader knowledge of genetics. While nicely structured and full of photographs, the book does have a frustrating design flaw where in several instances a single sentence will be split up by a multi-page pull-out section. A bibliography provides guidance for readers who want to delve into the subject more deeply. It also includes a glossary, index, and notes. Verdict: This book will be a great choice for dog lovers with an interest in science, or science lovers with an interest in dogs.

Grades 9 - 12: This is an honest story of a high school boy who no longer likes whom he has become. In changing himself he changes his community. Though most characters are heavily stereotyped, the unusual vehicle of the confessional approach and fast paced writing makes the story immediate and interesting. Verdict: It is a good story: not everything is what you think it is, you are responsible for your own life and choices, and sometimes taking any action is better than no action at all.

Pa tells Caleb to go to his aunt's and she will take him in until he can return. Caleb is dark skinned and the small fishing village in unwelcoming. His aunt takes him in. Her husband is away at sea and he learns to get along with her step daughter, Letty, who is close to his age, and toddler cousin. Grades 5-8: This was a fantastic book! It is the author’s debut novel and I’ll be looking for more books by him. It is aimed at middle grades, so most appropriate for 5th-8th grades. It is quite the page turner! Ted (12 years old) inherits his Great Uncle’s apartment along with all the contents after visiting the old man in the hospital shortly before his passing. Great Uncle Ted implores young Ted to “Go for broke and never give up!” He wants Ted’s promise. This begins quite an adventure for Ted, his buddy Caleb and new girl, Isabel. Ted is very good at escape room games on the computer and finds himself in a real life escape puzzle. Strange men come searching for information and the reader isn’t quite sure which is the bad guy until a little later in the story. The book gets a little scary when the kids are kidnapped, but by that point you have confidence in Ted and his friends and their ability to solve all the issues that they face. There is great mystery, adventure, suspense and humor in this book. Verdict: This is a very engaging book and should appeal to both boys and girls. It was hard to put down once I got started.

Grades 1 - 3, Grades 4 - 5: Humphrey, the class hamster loves his life in Mrs. Brisbane's class at Longfellow School. He pays attention when the teacher is teaching and he loves all the kids. The topic for this book is using your imagination to write. The students have been given the task to write a story about what you would do if you could fly. Mrs. Brisbane takes the kids through the steps to writing. She has them write in their notebook and brainstorm and then add details. Humphrey does the same and creates his story. His story includes each student from the class in his adventure. At the end, Humphrey lists his steps to writing.
This story has more adventures for Humphrey as he escapes from his cage each evening and visits another class pet. He waits for the janitor to come visit each evening. Also, he goes home with a different student each weekend and that provides an added adventure.
Kids will love this story as Humphrey is almost life-like. Verdict: Humphrey has many books and this is another fun story to add to the library shelves.

Random House, 2016
ISBN: 9781101933701`
$$17.99
Grades 9 - 12: Set in a revived Palace of Versaille, "Glitter" is a dystopia with a current events twist. The court of King Louis VI has been replicated with all of the intrigue, and Danica, catching the future king choking a female courtier to death in a consensual sexual act, has been elevated to future queen to insure her silence. It's the act of a socially climbing mother, rather than any desire on the part of Danica, and more than anything, Dani wants out of the arrangement. Her ticket becomes the trafficking of Glitter--a highly potent drug. Dani's court contacts provide an easy way to build the finances she needs to finally escape the king, and her general disdain for the courtiers makes them disposable. It isn't until her closest friend overdoses on it that Dani must confront the truly heinous nature of the drug. Verdict: This is a book that will have a niche audience, but will provide a good opportunity to discuss some of our current social issues.
Curricular Use: In terms of discussing drug use, this title meets the following Washington Health Education Standards: Analyze why individuals choose to use or not use substances (H1.Su1.HSa), Analyze how addiction and dependency impact individual families, and society (H1.Su2.Hsb), identify whether Glitter is a physiological or psychological addiction, compare Glitter to currently accessible substances. In terms of Social Studies standards, this book fits nicely with EALR 5: Social Studies Skills, specifically component 5.3 Deliberates public issue. The legalization and/or use/misuse of controlled substances as well as the criminal networks involved in making those substances available is especially timely.
