A New King
He came into the world just as you or I, with nothing but a cry;
Fingers and toes enough, just as you or I.
But he was born to be king.
His destiny mapped out before he took a breath.
Unaware of the burden which would rest on his shoulders he slept in his mother's arms, watched by the world.
He grew; a boy, a man;
And waited, for the moment he was born for.
The crown placed on his head,
He alone bears the weight of its responsibility,
And he is proclaimed king.
‘King of the Jews’.
Mocked by the crowds;
His crown, a plait of thorns;
His future, ended on a Roman cross,
Shocked subjects thrown into confusion.
Had destiny taken a wrong turn?
No, this was his destiny,
And this was just the beginning.
The beginning of a kingdom unlike any other.
Watching the coronation ceremony of King Charles III, the moment I found most moving was when, having pledged service to his people, the kingly regalia was removed and we saw a very ordinary man dressed in a simple white tunic prior to his anointing; a beautiful picture of what Jesus did for us in identifying himself with us - God taking on our human frailty. He taught us humility by example and overturned the concept of being a king.
At the Last Supper, knowing he was about to be betrayed and would give himself over to be crucified we read,
“Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist; he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet…" (John 13:3-5); afterwards he said, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another."
Jesus offers the world a new way forward; he says “the kingdom of God is within you.” (Luke 17), and invites us to be part of it.
"Come to me, all of you who are tired and have heavy loads, and I will give you rest. Accept my teachings and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in spirit, and you will find rest for your lives.” (Matthew 11)
