At the end of June 2024, 567 children from 21 schools visited Brinkburn Abbey to have a great day out and learn about the meaning and origins of Christian faith in Northumberland. On arriving in the coach park they were met by volunteers dressed as monks and brought down to the Abbey where they took part in drama workshops, craft activities, singing the Lifepath song and playlets as they learnt about Doubting Thomas and one of our local Saints, Cuthbert. The feedback from children and teachers has again been very positive. The event started before Covid halted it but has now been running again for three years.
Over 30 volunteers each day are needed to make the project a success. Lifepath is a Scripture Union schools event supported by Christians in Northumberland including the United Reformed Church and the Mustard Tree Trust. Churches are encouraged to support their local schools, as here in Longhorsley. Lifepath this year takes place from 23 to 27 June with a whole new gathering of children each day, and over 600 are expected over the week.
Some typical feedback from last year: School Pupil: “It was more fun than I thought it was going to be”. A Teacher: “Wonderful way to communicate how we can all connect to God” (last year’s theme). A Volunteer: “All the workshops were fun, interactive but also were able to demonstrate the love God has for us and how we can connect to Him”.
This year the themes will revolve around the life of St Oswald and ‘Trust in God’. So much of our culture is based on Christian belief: the importance of justice, the primacy of love, stories like that of the Good Samaritan. And in our part of England, we are blessed with a fascinating historical background which we also need to share with the younger generation. At a time when younger generations are showing more interest in spirituality, Lifepath Brinkburn encourages this.
