Recordings of the remaining topics will be posted in the next few weeks.

Here is a link to the folder containing all the session recordings, both video with audio (.mp4), and audio only (.m4a).

Ham Cram (in-person) for the FCC Amateur Radio "Technician" License

Once Los Gatos is no longer in Covid lockdown, this one-day class will be offered quarterly, We try to schedule each Ham Cram for the Saturday immediately following Santa Clara County Fire CERT Class graduations (for four of the six CERT Academies taught each year):

  • Ham Cram class - September 2021 (potential)

  • Ham Cram class - December 2021 (potential)

The flyer for the last class taught in 2020 can be downloaded from the FILES section at the bottom of this page. The flyer will be updated for 2021, but the one posted below, other than for the dates, is still valid for the most part.

To sign up, once the Ham Crams resume, go to and search for Ham Cram in Los Gatos

If you encounter problems signing up, send a note to: or text to 408-827-5127.

As the Brochure points out, you will need an FCC Registration Number (FRN) before the exam. You get one by registering at the FCC FRN webpage.

You should plan on taking the online practice exam several times before the class, but recognize that you are likely to answer fewer than 10 of the 35 questions correctly because you haven't studied. The purpose of taking the practice exam is to get comfortable with taking the exam and knowing what you are being asked to learn to get a license. Remember, we are only trying to teach you enough to pass the exam. Your real knowledge will come from using your radio and maybe participating in our various events.

The FCC Technician Class license is perfect for Emergency Communications activity. The more advanced licenses are valuable for purposes in addition to Emergency Communications (such as reaching national and international distances).

Directed Self-Study for the FCC Amateur Radio "Technician" License

For those with good motivation and study skills, who want to get the Technician License NOW, download the one-page flyer (near the bottom of this page) entitled "Guided Self-Study FCC Amateur Radio Technician license".

Take a Practice Exam

Try a practice exam now (will take only 10-15 minutes). Once on the exam page, click on Take a practice exam. The more times you take it the easier it gets, but we don't expect you to even come close to passing.

Almost everyone who has taken practice exams has passed the actual exam at the end of the Ham Cram class because your comfort and motivation to absorb the information will increase.

If you have the time and are curious, you can see the full Question Pool below from which the actual FCC exam questions are taken. Many of the questions may scare you, but DON'T worry, you will learn enough in class to PASS, even if you don't believe it now.

We review EVERY question in the FCC Technician Question Pool during the Ham Cram class.

These are the FCC Volunteer Examiners who administer the exam for us at the end of the class. If you prefer self-study, you can take the exam from them on the first or third Saturday morning of the month at the Saratoga Fire Station. Walk-ins accepted.
