In this day of amazing technology, we as teachers need to embrace all that is available to reach the hearts and minds of our students. If a picture is worth a 1,000 words, how much is a video worth? The church has gone to amazing lengths to create incredible video content to help students better understand the messages you are sharing. From General Conference excerpts to beautifully produced stories from the scriptures, there are hundreds of options available depending on your topic and class. And a short 3-5 minute video not only makes your lesson more interesting, it can create a more lasting memory while also helping to bring home your point in a way not possible through words alone. This video content is now available to use from a smart phone, tablet or laptop – even without a WiFi connection. And it is not just videos – the Church has put their picture library on the lds.org website as well, so all those beautiful images you may remember from your youth can be shared with this generation. Or you could play a hymn in your class from the audio library. The options are amazing and will only help you become a more effective teacher.
From the Teaching, No Greater Call manual we learn, “Teachers who desire to increase learners’ ability to understand and learn will also use visuals. Most people will learn better and remember longer when you present ideas by using pictures, maps, word groupings, or other visuals rather than merely speaking”.
