No doubt every teacher in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints knows to use the scriptures when they teach. The standard works are the word of God and provide the foundation of His gospel. But how we use them can also be important. Instead of just providing a verse for them to look up and read, try giving them a topic and have each student find and share the scripture they like best (and why!). Or divide them into smaller groups and have them discuss a scriptures meaning. Maybe show one of the great New Testament videos on the lds.org website so the students can experience the scriptures in a whole new way. Or find other ways to help your students learn to use and love the scriptures for themselves. And don’t forget the modern source of prophetic teaching from General Conference.

Teach the Doctrine - Principles and Methods of Teaching
“Jesus commanded us to “teach one another the doctrine of the kingdom” (D&C 88:77). Doctrine is the word of God as found in the scriptures and the teachings of latter-day prophets and apostles. The word of God has power to change our lives.
Teachers must ensure that they keep the doctrine pure by teaching gospel truths as the Lord has revealed them. You can do this by teaching from the scriptures and the words of the latter-day prophets. President Ezra Taft Benson said, “Always remember, there is no satisfactory substitute for the scriptures and the words of the living prophets. These should be your original sources”
Also make sure that you use Church-produced materials when you teach. This will help you keep the doctrine pure. Avoid speculation and private interpretations.”
