Chemical Reactions in Supercritical Fluids

Supercritical fluids can be reaction media in the synthesis of various products, such as biodiesel, and in the food industry, terpenic esters with aroma properties and sugar esters that can be applied as emulsifiers in the formulation of processed food. In these processes, immobilized enzymes act as catalyzers of the reactions in supercritical CO2. As well as in extraction, the separation of the reaction products from the solvent can be achieved through pressure reduction. Thus, supercritical fluids can replace liquid and toxic organic solvents, which are typically used as reaction media in the industry.
