Background

Akodo Tomochi was born into a middling offshoot of the Akodo family, and despite having slightly unsavoury ancestry, was sufficiently skilled at the Lion arts to ensure a rising trajectory in the ranks of warfare. Unfortunately, at a summer festival one year, he stumbled across a superior Akodo family member practising mahou in secret. To his credit, he slew her with only minor hesitation and took only the mahou-tsukai's dying curse in unconsciousness and illness for a month. When he recovered, he found that all traces of the dark magic practice in the incident had been swept quietly out of public view, and instead he was being accused of murdering the Akodo family member in a fit of passion. It was eventually discarded as a duel gone awry, but the perceived dishonour for the deed remained.

To preserve his family, he very strongly distanced himself from them, and became a pariah in the clan, fit only for sending to the wall and for roles no one else wanted. When the families were asked to provide for the Okami, it was seen as a good way to get rid of this unwanted eyesore.

Backstory

From the Dragon clan. Spent time at the Kaiu wall after being recruited by Ryoji. Ancestor was famous for love affair with a Mantis.

Natsuko's family are minor nobility, with minor land holdings in the mountains. Natsuko is the second son, his brother Sozen recently inherited. He was betrothed (to Tamori Kuniko), but she was killed by a hungry ghost before they could be married.

Backstory

Kakita Takumi is a typically Crane/Kakita blend of bushi duelist, artisan and courtier. When he began his career as yojimbo to the courtier Doji Akemi, he fell hopelessly in love with her. Bound by his duty and the fact that she was betrothed to another, he concealed his feelings and resolved to be worthy of her, even if he could never have her love. With his natural bent for persuasion (Benten’s Blessing) and his artistic abilities (Soul of Artistry) he proved as much a courtier and an artisan as a duelist. When disaster struck and Doji Akemi was killed, Takumi was devastated – he had both failed in his duty and lost his love. A Dragon was found guilty of her murder, but Takumi found no solace in the fact. He has since been sent by the Crane Clan to be their representative in the newly-formed Wolf Clan, becoming Okami Takumi.

Takumi is prone to bouts of melancholy when reminded of his lost love Akemi. He does however find solace in his artistry, and has become accomplished at origami, as well as practicing other forms of art such as painting, poetry and calligraphy (through Soul of Artistry). He may be turning his hand to gardening, to get the Wolf Clan Court gardens up to scratch... Although not trained by the Doji school he is a fairly competent courtier (by non-Crane standards). That said, for a bushi he is only barely competent on the battlefield, even if he is an excellent duelist.

Backstory

A peasant who managed to win the Tsuruchi archery contest, earning his place in the Wasp Clan. A botched investigation into a suspected affair led to Yukio killing the wrong man - who turned out to be a maho-tsukai, saving him some face at least. A committed follower of the Code of the Wasp, rather than the Code of Bushido. Sent here to represent the Phoenix clan (no-one really understands why they sent a Wasp rather than one of their own).
