Summaries:

Algebra in Everyday Life -- This was an end of multiple chapters assignment for a College Algebra class. These students frequently struggle to connect the utility of learning algebra with their own life. The project was meant to take the place of a single class slot, but cover more than just a "lesson" . Here, they travelled to a local grocery store (I met some of them, but others did it on their own elsewhere) to practice using algebra to enhance their own lives. Some changes have been incorporated from it's original pilot.

Craps Project -- This was a project designed to replace a chapter/week of Introductory Statistics material. The students had already covered the basics of probability and statistical measures (mean, standard deviation, etc). This is a slightly refined version from what was originally piloted. I plan to incorporate a few more refinements before using it again.

Survey Analysis (Statistics, Statistics, Statistics!) -- At the end of the semester of Statistics, I wanted to see if students could take their knowledge of hypothesis testing and apply it in new ways. Earlier in the semester they had participated in a study of class room expectations, so I had them do a project where they took the data collected from the study and developed their own questions to test against the data. The students were given a chance to truly demonstrate that they learned and would be able to apply that knowledge in the future. I've included the entire assignment packet, and also a few examples of what students turned in.

Quizzes -- These are a few sample quizzes from different classes. You'll notice that most include at least one short-answer type question where a qualitative or written answer is required. I believe that being able to actually interpret results is a vital part of learning any method. Simply knowing calculations or techniques is (generally) a waste of time. More samples for each class can be found under the files for that class.

Tests -- Most of the tests I've written have had to follow closely old tests from other renditions of courses I was teaching. Some of them follow them exactly, a few I've tried to incorporate more of my belief in testing holistic knowledge of students. One tidbit of advice I strive to incorporate into exams is to make each question independent of previous parts or work whenever possible so students never are required to do ALL the steps correctly to show they know something of the material. This is shown in some of these exams, whenever I had more freedom in the writing.
