Blocks and Strikes have common mechanics. They both take advantage of the body's physiology in that the arms pivot about the backbone or spine.
In the case of an upper left arm block - the left arm, "pushed" up/forward is aided by the right arm "pulling" backwards rotating about the spine. In addition, the hips and legs aid the rotation by its natually larger muscle strength. Coupled with a proper stance and syncronous movement, the left arm block is well braced and effectiveness maximized.
A Fist Strike shares the technique of a block - The push and pull of the arms, involving the rotation of the hips powered by the legs, maximize the strength and velocity of the strike. In addition, the fist configuration targets the index and middle finger knuckles as the site of impact. Therefore, the surface area of the strike is concentrated in a much smaller spot as compared to the entire fist.
Timing of muscle contraction - To maximize the velocity of the strike or block, all components of the body should be relaxed leading up to the impact. Especially the hands, arms, and shoulders . At near impact, fist should tighted simultaneouly with the stomach or Tanden area.
