KITCHING

Reuben Hornby KITCHING was born on 23 May 1913, High Throston , CoDurham, son of Robert William and Ellen KITCHING (nee LAWRANCE). He was christened at St Pauls, West Hartlepool on 6 June 1913. He married Monica May WILSON, on 22 Sep 1939, Grangetown, Yorkshire. The marriage was witnessed by Freda Peers and John George Starrfox/Harrfox (writing is hard to decipher), at the time of his marriage he lived at 5 Green St. Southbank Yks.

Rueben served in WW2 as a gunner in Royal Artillary - service number 862538, in 1939 was attached to #174 Battery, Tees C Position, Brambles Farm, he was in France and was part of the Dunkirk exodus. After war worked at Dorman Long Steel Plant, Grangetown, until retirement at age 65.

Rueben and May lived at Bolkow Rd (opposite Lyric) Grangetown; 34 Stafford Rd ,Grangetown; 57 Attlee Rd., Grangetown and finally in England at 17 Sycamore Cres. Teesville. On 25 June , 1978 they emigrated to Ontario Canada, first to Caledonia, then Godfrey and finally Etobicoke. They celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary a few days before Reubens fatal heart attack.

Reuben died on 26 Sep 1984, Toronto at age 71. He was cremated on 27 Sep 1984 at The Ridley Funeral Home Chapel, Etobicke. His ashes were scattered on the banks of Meadowlake, Godfrey, Ontario on 28 Sep 1984. He was an avid gardener, and also liked to tinker with his cars. Rueben and May had five children; Barbara EllenKITCHING born 1941; Leonard KITCHING born 1943; Victor KITCHING born 1945; Patricia KITCHINGborn 1948; Linda KITCHING born 1950.

Robert William KITCHING was born on 5 Aug 1886, Angleham, Kirkby Fleetham , son of Stephen and Martha Jane KITCHING (nee STEPHENSON). He married Ellen LAWRANCE, on November 28 1908, at the parish church in High Worsall , Yorkshire. The marriage was witnessed by Stephen Kitching and Ada Kitching.

Robert worked as a farm hand in High Worsall in 1908 and then at possibly High Throston Farm, Hartlepool in 1913. During WW1 Robert was a sergeant (15518) serving with the 10th Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment. He was Killed in Action on 27 Jul 1917 at age 30 and is buried in Cojeul British Cemetery, St. Martin-sur-Cojeul, France. Army records have him killed in 1915 which has to be an error as the picture on the left was taken in 1917 while he was recouperating from a leg injury. He is noted on the Southbank, Yks War memorial. Robert and Ellen had four children; Lawrance KITCHING born 1901, died 1987; Reuben Hornby KITCHING born 1913, died 1984; Ronnie KITCHING born 1917, died 1963; and Leslie KITCHING born 1918, died 199?.

Stephen KITCHING was born on 29 Nov 1857, Masham Yorkshire, son of John and Mary KITCHING (nee PROUT). In 1861 Stephen was living in Hartlepool, Yorkshire, but by 1871 the family had moved back to New House, Low Ellington, near Masham. Stephen worked as a farm servant for James Ingledew, at Lowfield House, Kirkby Fleetham , in 1881 (1881 census). He married Martha Jane STEPHENSON, on June 2, 1883, at the parish church of Hornby, Yorkshire. The marriage was witnesses by William John Edwards and Sarah Jane Stephenson. His address at the time was East Harsley, Hornby, Yorkshire. Stephen and Martha Jane lived in Great Fencote, Yks, where their children were born. Thomas in 1885, Robert William in 1886, Stephen Wilson in 1889, Rueben in 1891 and Florrie 1896. On the 1891 census Stephens occupation was listed as a Farm Labourer and on the 1901 as Ordinary Agricultural labourer. In 1891 (according to the census) Martha Jane's uncle, Robert WIlson was living with them, also her sister, Sarah Ann Owen with sons, Phillip Edgar and James William. Martha died in 1905 and Stephen remarried (Ada HARRISON). Grandma Kitching was alive August Bank Holiday 1942, living in Thornaby , they had one child, Margaret born in 1906. Margaret was living with her family in Thornaby in the 1950's. Stephen died in Thornaby, Yorkshire.

Reuben married Fanny Beatrice BRACEY in 1922 and sailed for Australia in 1924 aboard the SS Ballarat to Melbourne. They had a daughter Joan in 1930 in Victoria, where they had settled. Reuben was a railway employee.

John KITCHING was born in 1833, Masham, Yorkshire. the son of Stephen and Margaret KITCHING (nee FAWCETT) , he was christened on October 17, 1833 at Masham. On the 1841 census John was living in Thirn, Yorkshire, by 1851 he was working as a farm labourer for Thomas Knowles, South Cote, Burton Upon Ure, Yorkshire. On November 24, 1856, John married Mary PROUT in the Parish Church, Masham, after Banns and the wedding was witnedded by Richard Beckwith & John Ellis. Both bride and groom were 23 years old and signed with an X. Son Stephen was born in 1857 in Masham, daughter Margaret was born in 1859 in Barton, Yks, and son William was born in 1861 in Thorton le fold, Yks. On the 1861 census the family had moved to Hartlepool and John was listed as a Farm Labourer. The family had moved once again by 1871 to Ellington Ambo in Yorkshire, where John was still employed as a farm labourer. Daughter Jane was born in 1871 after the census was taken. By 1881 the family had moved to Langthorne in the district of Bedale, John's occupation was listed as 'general labourer'. Daughter Louisa was born in 1884 and wife Mary died sometime before 1891. On the 1891 census John is listed as a widower living with daughters Mary A and Louisa, he is once again listed as an Agricultural labourer. John death possibly took place in Stockton district in 1891.

Stephen KITCHING was born circa 1809 in Masham, Yorkshire, the son of Robert and Jane KITCHING (nee BREARTON), he was baptised on March 19, 1809 in West Tanfield, Yorkshire. He married Margaret FAWCETT January 1, 1833, in Tanfield Parish, Yks. The marriage was witnessed by Christopher Marsden & Wm Heding?, both bride and groom signed with an X. Daughter Mary was born in 1829; sons John in 1833, Robert in 1836, William in 1838 (born Thornton re 1851 census); and daughter Elizabeth in 1841. They can all be found on the 1841 census, with Stephen listed as an Ag Lab. Son Thomas was born in 1884; daughter Jane in 1846; both all in Thornton: and son Joseph in 1850 in Masham; re the 1851 census where the family could be found at Mill Hill, Burton Upon Ure, Yks; both Stephen and son William (aged 13) were listed as Ag Labs. By 1861 Stephen and Margaret are still in Burton Upon Ure but only William and Joseph are still with them; and by 1871 Thomas has returned home, William has left, and Joseph is still there; all the men are Ag labs. By 1881 Stephen is a widower living on his own and possibly died in 1886.

William married Hannah MUDD in 1863 and they had children Thomas (1866), William (1868), Henry (1872), and George (1877).

Robert KITCHING was born circa 1774, the son of Robert and Beatrice KITCHING (nee DINSDALE), he was baptised December 25, 1774 in West Tanfield, Yks. He married Jane BREARTON on February 27, 1779 in Tanfield Parish. The groom signed his name and the bride used an X, the marriage was witnessed bt Thon Horsman. Their daughter Ann was born in 1800; son John in 1801 (died before 1820); daughter Elizabeth in 1804; son Robert in 1807; son Stephen in 1809; son William in 1810; son Richard in 1814; son Thomas in 1815; daughter Beatrice in 1817; and son John in 1820. Robert and Jane can be found on the 1841 census, along with sons Richard and John, in Thornborough, West Tanfield; Robert's occupation is given as Stone Mason. In 1851 Robert and Jane were on their own, Robert's occupation was listed as Lane Proprietor (?) and Jane as an Ag Lab. Robert possibly died in 1853.

Robert KITCHING (KITCHEN) was born circa 1740. He married Beatrice DINSDALE on November 24, 1764, in Burneston. Their children were:- Ann (1765), baptised October 27, 1765; John (1766) baptised October 12, 1766; Beatrice (1769), baptised March 27, 1769; Robert (1771 - pre 1774) baptized April 21, 1771; Ann (1772) baptised October 11, 1772; Robert (1774) baptised December 25, 1774; and Mary (1777) baptised December 26, 1777; all in West Tanfield.

WILSON

Monica May WILSON was born on 2 May 1922, Middlesbrough , Yorkshire, daughter of Victor Charles and Barbara WILSON (nee MAPLETHORPE), spouse of Reuben Hornby KITCHING. She died on 16 Nov 1995, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, at age 73, and was cremated at the Teesside Crematorium. Her ashes were brought back to Canada and sprinkled with Reuben's. Monica May earned a nursing degree after raising her children, she worked most of her Nursing career at Eston Hospital. She also loved to garden, for her it was the indoor kind, she had quite a collection of indoor plants. May returned to England after the death of her life long partner, Reuben.

LAWRANCE

Ellen LAWRANCE was born on 25 Jul 1885, South Bank Yorkshire, daughter of William and Lydia LAWRANCE (nee HORNBY), spouse of Robert William KITCHING. She died on 30 Jul 1963 in Hemlington Hospital at age 78. Ellen married for a second time in 1921, her second husband was Sydney Allen WIGGLESWORTH. Ellen and Sydney had three children.

William LAWRANCE married Lydia HORNBY. He was born in 1850, possibly in Torrington, Norfolk.

STEPHENSON

Martha Jane STEPHENSON was born in 1855, Great Fencote , Yorkshire (1891 census), daughter of Thomas STEPHENSON, spouse of Stephen KITCHING.

Thomas STEPHENSON was born circa 1835 (1891 census).

HORNBY

Lydia HORNBY was born in 1850, The Croft , East Hartlepool. Spouse of William LAWRANCE. She died on 30 Dec 1912.

PROUT
