Earliest Post Recusant Registers - Ugthorpe

The earliest known Catholic Registers of Ugthorpe are those of Father Monox Hervey which date from 1734 to 1745. These are printed in volume 14 of the Catholic Record Society's publication.

This transcript has been compiled from various books arid papers, for the access to which, I thank Fr. Ryan very much indeed.

The priests concerned were Father James Bertout, Father George Leo Haydock, Father John Woodcock and Father Nicholas Rigby. At times the neighbouring parish of Saint Helda's Egton Bridge was jointly served by the Ugthorpe Priest, hence the presence of Egton occurences.

The entries are wholly Baptismal as Marriage and Death ones are minimal. The very early ones did not indicate the maiden name of the mother or godparents.

During the preparation of the transcript it became evident that the pages had been renumbered in some cases and that some were missing.

Fr. Ryan very kindly gave permission for a more thorough examination to be made and in the course of which it was found that pages 5-16, 21-22, 25-26, 129-132 were not present. The last group carried Baptisms between Feb. 2nd 1612 and December 4th l817 comprising sixty-six entries.

More deaths and marriages were discovered, details of which have now been inserted, as have some additional Baptisms.

It is now certain that the pages endorsed "probably an Egton Bridge Register" are actually for that parish since concurrent Ugthorpe ones are now present. This leads me to hope that the missing pages could possibly be at Egton Bridge.

The figures on the extreme right are the bench rents to offset the cost. Those in the congregation refer to the number of seats for the family, and the others to the bench numbers, each holding six worshippers. There were more obliterations than indicated, mostly the result of a death in the parish.
