Robert McEver was born in 1830 in Georgia, probably in Jackson County. He is first listed in the 1850 census as a laborer on his father's farm in "Subdivision 45" of Jackson County. In the 1860 census he is married to Mary Lee of Clarke County and owns $1600 of real estate in "Randolph District" of Jackson County.
McEver enlisted in May of 1862 with the 16th Battalion, Georgia Partisan Rangers. That unit was then consolidated with other units into full strength and re-designated as the 13th Regiment Georgia Volunteer Cavalry. The record of the regiment is difficult to trace but they were present at the Battle of Piedmont in the Shenandoah Valley. After that they moved with Genereal John C. Vaughn into Tennessee and lost heavily at the Battle of Morristown. Following the battle they moved into North Carolina to try to join with General Johnston's army which was shadowing Sherman. They then joined Confederate president Jefferson Davis and became his escort as he fled south.

For the remainder of McEver's life he is listed as a farmer in the censuses. He is listed as living in the Hoschton area of Jackson County. McEver died in 1914.
