Nathaniel Skinner was born in 1818 in North Carolina. By the 1850s census he is living in Lumpkin County, Georgia with his brother Edward who is listed as a "Merchant". In the 1860 census he is married to Elizabeth Whelchel and is listed as a farmer with $200 worth of real estate.
In the 1864 Census for Re-Organizing the Georgia Militia he listed as "Exempt" due to being in the "Home guard #12". He was in the 4th Georgia Cavalry State Guards which were
organized in August 1863 to serve for six months as local defense in the 6th and 9th Congressional districts and in the counties of Wilkes, Lincoln, Columbus, Warren and Hancock.

Skinner remains listed as a farmer in the 1870 and 1880 census. Skinner died in 1891.
