John Sanges lived in Marietta, Georgia and was a minister. He was 42 years old when he joined the 7th Regiment, Georgia State Guards. The unit formed around mid-summer of 1863, probably due to the encroachment of the Federal army toward Chattanooga which culminated at the Battle of Chickamuage, and disbanded at the end of the six-month enlistment which came in January of 1864.
First enlistment roll for Sanges. Interesting here is the "Limits" in which the unit would serve.
Here it is shown that Sanges was "Detailed for Government work. It is unknown the nature of the work.
This is the final muster roll for Sanges. It shows he is still away but it notes it is by "Order of Gen. Cobb" which is General Howell Cobb. At that time Cobb was the commander of the Georgia Reserve corps.
Following his expiration of service, Sanges stayed in Marietta and was a "Carriage Trimmer" according to the 1870 US Census. The 1880 Census repeats these details. Sanges died in 1895 and is buried in the Marietta City Cemetery.
