Welcome to the wonderful world of having a sword stuck in your back! The burning, sharp pain will subside, replaced with an itching soon for you.
This is a guide/FAQ for you to quickly look over and back to when you have a question that can't be immediately answered by either Das or a fellow moderator.
As this is a guide/FAQ, you are free to interpret the grey areas based on the situation.
First: Das is human, and as he can get a few hundred people hanging around him daily, may sometimes have his head start to inflate. I call this Manley Syndrome. It is part of your job to remove the blockage from his ear to allow the air to flow back out and return his head to normal size. He doesn't like this.
Second: In our "Moderatore Chat", you are free. Say what you want, when you want, but no personal attacks. This walks a fine line when we complain about annoying viewers, but just don't bring their mother into it, unless you are saying that even their mother couldn't love them. It's also a great place to put those
inappropriate jokes that just need to be said that you have to purge in chat. ie: Das says "It seems heavier in the rear." In Mod Chat: Fat bottom girls,
you make the rockin' world go round!
Third: This ain't no job! Go to bed! Das is the only one getting a paycheck from streaming. If you need a break, go! Now! This will be more important than you think. You'll burnt out, get irritable or cranky, and when you're tired, your judgement slips. I know. The last one is the most important as you need to be able to cover all the chat quickly and not think about it a second time. Also, you know yourself better than we do, know when you need to take a "vacation". You're welcome to "vacation" time whenever you need it.
Fourth: When in doubt as to what to do, ask. If none of the moderators have responded in a reasonable time, just ask Das to check Skype. He'll give you an answer before you see it on stream.
There are some tools out there to help us do what we do. Better Twitch TV and Chatty for those of us not on Linux. And I'd be surprised if you weren't already
using BTTV. Chatty is a program that will keep logs of chat, allow you to use moderator tools, and like Das says, "Open up a VIP window" on someone's chat. Yeah,
Das uses Chatty. When you click someone's name you can look at their history. This is very nice for reviewing what what asked/said quickly. The logs are also nice
so that you can review why someone was banned three months down the road when they appeal to Das later. As Das usually has the logs, he generally ignores these requests
but in questionable circumstances or no logs, he'll ask us about it. This isn't a review of you doing your job improperly, just seeing why we felt the ban was needed
over a time out. That's for when we didn't add someone to the Banned User List:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1oFan49wIN9ixqORMvg_f1gPn1yypvKjFFJ2Y1YtBB6A/edit#gid=0
The site is for putting the Viewer's name and why we banned a person, bots are automatic bans without needing to be posted unless you think they are a person.
A short FAQ:
Can you help me do ____ in Chatty?
No. But maybe the FAQ from TheThaytor can! Chatty help
When do I purge, 10 minute, hour, longer, or ban?
This is enitrely up to you. Generally, you step it up based on repeat offender. When you get multiple mods who time someone out, it's the last mod's TO that will be enforced, so check in Mod Chat for reasons as to what length and enforce the one you all seem to agree on. (Tends to be the longest)
I'm not going to be available for ____ . Is this a problem?
We'll take it out of your paycheck.
WTF is an initialism!?
WTF is an initialism ;) ASAP is as well. Purge only those that could have inappropriate language.
I feel bad about badmouthing viewers in Mod Chat. Why do you do it?
To keep our fucking sanity and not ban them without cause. Venting is the only way not to hunt down and strangle the life out of the most annoying ones.
Why not just give them a timeout?
Because Das is the only one who can timeout someone without cause. We have a clear set of rules we follow below the stream. If we're annoyed, it's likely that Das will be as well. And he's never been shy about shaming them by calling them out about it on stream. And venting in Mod Chat will bring it to his attention.
Notice me, Senpai Das! ever get annoying to anyone else?
Yep, but as long as they don't highlight every sentence or it's the only thing they ever say, nothing you can do about it. Notice me watching you, Viewer!
Where did you learn all this?
I personally watched Addle42, who learned from Teflon_Mike, who learned it from a great master shaolin Dhali Llama Pope of moderating thousands of years ago.
Do you read everything in chat? HOW!?
You don't have to. On the busiest days you'll have help. I've yet to see us miss anything, but you'll get faster at reading, as well as master skimming.
I just timed someone out when I meant to purge! What do I do?
Just time them out for 1 second. It goes to the most recent for enforcement. Also, if you ban someone on accident, unban them as soon as possible. Friendly-fire happens. Especially when we are busy.
Most viewers will laugh it off, hopefully with you, especially after you apologize. But definitely apologize in stream chat!
