Hotels / B&B Services
The following, to date, have not been tried, except if in italics:
· Hotel 31 -- Clean, extremely reasonable, coupon for reduced breakfast at nearby restaurant (Guy and Gallard, located at 34th and Lexington and serving excellent coffee). The hotel is at 31st between Park and Lexington Avenues. It offers rooms at probably the lowest prices in NYC - a room for two people, with shared bath (though such rooms have a sink), can be as low as $107/night + tax. Rooms are cozy. Try to get a room on the 8th floor facing west, with a view of the Empire State Building. This is a steal at a great midtown location with nearby East Side subway (station at 32nd and Park Avenue). UPDATE AS OF MAY 2022: Currently as a result of a dispute with the city of New York, the hotel is not accepting short-term guests until the dispute issues are resolved.
· Pod51 Hotel, 230 E. 51st St., between 2nd & 3rd Avenues - single and double "pods" with shared bath may be available at a reasonable rate; hotel is stylish, centrally located
· YMCA Hotels in Manhattan: Several YMCA locations (e.g., Westside on W. 63rd St.) have guest rooms at very reasonable prices; as a non-profit, there is no added tax, which represents a considerable savings. Rooms are basic, no sink. Dormitory style shared bathrooms on each floor, which are kept very clean.

· Hotel 32/32, 32 E. 32nd St. - mid-priced, chic small rooms, friendly management; breakfast at a nearby basic restaurant included in the price
· Jane, The, 113 Jane St., West Village (Budget hotel that is quite attractive)

· Pickwick Hotel – very inexpensive, midtown location
· Habitat Hotel NYC – very inexpensive, shared bath, midtown location
· Habitat NY B&B – Arranges very reasonable B&B accommodations and sublets in good locations [NOTE: Also can arrange sublets in Paris, London, and Rome]
· · Serenity at Home, 57 Rutland Road, Prospect Lefferts Gardens (Brooklyn), 646 /479-5138; https://www.serenityah.com/ - (Somewhat inconvenient location, 3-day minimum with rigorous refund policy, but very affordable)
Restaurants Tried & Liked or Recommended
Barbetta (Italian) - Expensive, 100-year old restaurant; pre-theater pre-fixe of $58 (2018) until 7:30 p.m., plus half-priced pastas, W. 46th St.,, between 8th and 9th Avenues
Benoit (French) - Lesser priced (but still fairly expensive) restaurant of Alain Ducasse; traditional French food, superb service, 60 W. 55th St.
Biang (Chinese - Shaanxi Province), 41-10 Main Street, Flushing, Queens (near Main St. substation of the No. 7 train) - very authentic, in a heavily Chinese neighborhood
Bôite en Bois, La (French): Reasonable, intimate, good food, reservations essential, 75 W. 68th St., just east of Columbus Avenue/ 212.874-2705
Carmine’s (Old style Italian): Big, loud, noisy, good, old-fashioned food, reasonable. This is the original location; the Theater District location is very difficult to get into, 2450 Broadway, between W. 90th and W. 91st Streets
Cha ka Qellu: Authentic, excellently prepared Albanian food, 118. E. 31st St.
Craft: Stupendous cooking, locally and farm-sourced ingredients; very expensive, 43 W. 19th St. (near Fifth Avenue)
Crave - A Fishbar: Between 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. an excellent selection of oysters for $2 each, 945 2nd Avenue (near 50th Street)
Dirt Candy: The most creative vegetarian cooking yet sampled, 86 Allen St. (just south of Delancey)
DB Bistro Moderne: Part of the Boulud empire - has an excellently priced 3-course pre-fix pre-theater interesting menu, 255 W. 44th St. (Times Square)
Gioconda, La (Italian): Good food. Very inexpensive 2-course lunch with numerous choices, 226 E. 53rd Street, between 3rd and 2nd Avenues
Hide-Chan: Superb, authentic Japanese ramen noodle house - looks like one could be in Tokyo, 248 E. 52nd Street, between 2nd and 3rd Avenues
Il Buco Alimentari e Vineria: Highly regarded for its homemade breads, good drinks, and brisket, 53 Great Jones St., off The Bowery / 212.837-2622
Jeans-George Nougatine: Very high class with the most reasonable 3-course lunch in New York for a restaurant of this quality (in 2010: $28), 1 Central Park West between W. 59th and W. 60th Streets / 212.299-3900
Kebab House No. 1 (Afghan): Excellent and very inexpensive food in a tiny, authentic setting, 764 9th Avenue between W. 51st and W. 52nd Streets
La Bonne Soupe (French): Has a delightful small 2nd floor veranda (with, unfortunately, just a few tables). Famous for its classic French onion soup.. West 55th Street
Loeb Boathouse: On a lake in Central Park - as romantic a place for a fine lunch as can be imagined in New York (there is also a cafe (not on the water) and a bar (on the lake); Central Park at ~75th Street
Mee Noodle (Chinese): No atmosphere, but good, very cheap food, large portions, 922 2nd Avenue @ E. 49th Street / 212.888-0027
Mee Noodle (Chinese): Pleasant atmosphere, authentic food, 795 9th Avenue @ W. 53rd Street / 212.888-0027
Melba's: A neighborhood favorite for classic soul food and updated versions; 300 W. 114th St.
Osteria Morini: Excellent fixed-price lunch and fine selection of Italian wines, 218 Lafayette St., just south of Spring St. / 212.965-8777
Pain Quotidien, Le (French Country): Inexpensive, always busy, noisy, but comfortable and good basic food for lunch or breakfast; Various locations (location in Central Park is particularly attractive)
Picholine: Expensive, excellent food, 35 W. 64th Street, No. 1, between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue
Rangoon: Burmese cuisine in a clean, modern setting. Located near the Joyce Theater on lower Eight Avenue.
Robert: Top floor of the Museum of Arts and Design, with a wonderful view out and stylishly designed - Columbus Circle
Sala Thai (Thai): Relatively inexpensive, good food, quiet, 1718 2nd Avenue between 89th and 90th Streets / 212.410-5557
Sandro (Italian: Roman): Expensive but excellent, Best Roman food in New York; reservations essential, 306 E. 81st Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues / 212.288-7374
