Perhaps not so "random" notes, but it is unclear if/how the Liddell family features in our Family tree. The following notes represent what is known/has been established thus far. The "mystery" starts with two gentlemen:
Rev. Andrew Liddell Dick (b.1831-d.1889) [son of Walter Dick and Mary Donald]
Walter Dick, minister of George Street Baptist church, Glasgow. ca 1832/3 (ref. Second report of the commissioners of religious instruction, Scotland, presented by command of Her Majesty to both Houses of Parliament, 1836/7.)
Questions:
Who was Andrew Liddell Dick named after?
Who was Walter Dick, minister of George Street Baptist Church?
Facts
According to Glasgow PO Directories for 1841, Walter Dick (of W & P Dick) lived at 238 George Street, also one Walter Dick MD lived at the same address in George Street.
With reference to Walter Dick M.D., Glasgow University archives hold testimonials covering the period 19 April 1831 to 29 July 1831. These testimonials confirm that this Walter Dick attended classes in Midwifery, Anatomy, Surgery, Materia Medica and Physic. They also attest to his time as Clerk to the Lock Hospital.
In particular, one article dated Glasgow, 28th December, 1831 reads:
These are to Certify, that we have been long and intimately acquainted with Mr Walter Dick's family, and know that they have been brought up in a strictly sober manner. His Son, Mr. Walter Dick, we know to be an active assiduous young man, earnestly intent on acquiring a thorough knowledge of the Medical Profession, to which he is enthusiastically attached, and we can recommend him as strictly sober, both from inclination and education.
Andrew Duncan
Richard Duncan
We know that there was an Andrew Duncan was a minister of George Street Baptist, before Walter Dick, this can be seen from the the report of the commissioners of religious instruction alluded to previously (above).
We know of an Andrew Liddell who had Scotch Baptist connections. This Andrew Liddell was an elder/pastor of Brown Street Congregation. [http://www.gracesguide.co.uk/Andrew_Liddell]
