Allan Reid was the grandson of Henry Reid, grocer and spirit dealer in Calton, Glasgow, he married Ellen Galt Mitchell in 1899. The 1901 census shows Janet Mitchell [Allan's mother-in-law] was residing. Allan died 1933 in Rothesay - his sister Margaret Reid was informant.
Allan worked for a company in Manchester specialising in the Turkey Red/Calico Printing process, and for helping to sort out their financial problems in India he was presented with a clock bearing the name plate John Hall & Co. Manchester
Part of the clock workings appear to be stamped "99 R".
Allan spoke at the
Excelsior Literary Society
London Road Literary Association
Sydney Place U.P. Church Bible Class.
Although it is not known if Allan was necessarily a religious man, some of the papers he has written suggest this may well have been the case, not to mention others in the family (a brother, a cousin and three uncles) who entered divinity may well have had a religious influence in Allan's life (albeit indirect in places) - for example :
his brother Rev Henry Reid MA (before emigration to Australia in 1886)
his uncle Andrew Reid a student in divinity sadly died in early years some 33 years before Allan was born.
his maternal uncle Rev. Andrew Liddel Dick (Bannockburn & Woodean UP Bothwell)
his maternal uncle Rev Walter Dick MD (Baptist)
his cousin Rev. Peter Forrester Slater, Baptist minister at Westray Orkney, later Broomhaugh & Stocksfield England)
