The meaning of the name for the Bodhisattva of compassion, Avalokitesvara, is the "one who perceives the cries of the world".
Appearing as either male of female, this Bodhisattva is widely referred in Mahayana Buddhism. It is due to his vow to assist sentient beings in great difficulties that this Being finds multiple expressions in the arts as well, aiding beings to turn towards him or her.
In Tibetan Buddhism Avalokitesvara is known as Chenrezig and is either depicted with either four or thousand arms. It is held that insight into the true meaning of emptiness - the basis of our being - is only possible through the cultivation of compassion. It is in this way that a second and profound purpose is held by the practice on Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara.
