Children's Literature

Children's literature is a great tool in the math classroom to help connect math concepts to a real life context, and help to engage students in the learning material. There are a number of authors that write books specifically for the mathematical links and there are other mathematical connections that happen naturally through the writing process. Below are some of my favourite books to use in my Grade 4 classroom, as well as some other tested favourites from other students in my Primary/Junior Math Part 2 Additional Qualification Course. By clicking on each title, you will be directed to the Amazon.ca website were you can find reviews of the book.

A more comprehensive list can be located in the "Guide to Effective Instruction in Mathematics, Kindergarten to Grade 6, Volume Three, pages 82-90". If you have a favourite that is not on the list please feel free to use the "Comment" section to submit your recommendation.
