Base Ten Blocks

What are base ten blocks?

Base ten blocks are a must have item for any math classroom. Base ten blocks were create to assist students with understanding the numerical place value system (one, tens, hundreds, thousands) that we use today which is based on the number ten. Each of the different sized blocks represents a different value (see chart below for understanding of the relationship between the cubes and the value for whole numbers). Base ten blocks can also be utilized to teach decimal numbers, the base ten blocks are then given different associations based on how many digits are in the decimal number.
