What is a calculator?

Calculators are an inexpensive tool that allows students to calculate complex mathematical operations quickly, with a high degree of accuracy. Students of the 21st century have access to calculators everywhere from their cellular phones, to their laptops, and it is important that they are taught how to use calculators in a meaningful and appropriate way. Although calculators are a great tool, they are not a replacement for conceptual understanding, and it is still critical that students have a solid mathematical foundation in order to utilize this tool effectively.

For students in the junior grades, a calculator with basic functions in an excellent investment. Most dollar stores have models that will be great for their use, and they are inexpensive if they need to be replaced.
